JSW Steel (Construction)
Introduction
Jindal Vijaynagar Airport (IATA: VDY, ICAO: VOJV), also known as Vidyanagar Airport, is an airport located in the Vidyanagar municipality, about 5 kilometers from the town of Toranagallu in the Indian state of Karnataka. The airport's operator is JSW Steel, which also owns a nearby steel factory. The runway was initially only available to plant workers, but began receiving commercial flights in 2006 after the construction of some additional facilities. The airport fell into disuse between 2009 and 2017, the year TruJet airline began service to Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
History
Initially the airport functioned only as a runway for employees of JSW Steel, which operated a nearby steel plant. However, in 2004 the state government decided to allow commercial flights to the airport, as it wanted to support the economic development of the region by attracting tourists and businessmen. The track is close to the monuments of Hampi and the cities of Bellary and Hospet. Although there was already an airport in Bellary, its runway was too short and narrow, and there was no room to expand it. Goa.[7][8] The flights ended in early 2009 due to a lack of demand.[9].
Commercial service to the airport resumed in 2017 when regional airline TruJet began flights to Hyderabad "Hyderabad (India)";[10] the following year it complemented them with flights to Bangalore.[11] The service is part of a national government project called Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik, which aims to promote regional connectivity by subsidizing flights to medium and small towns in the country.[11].
Facilities
The airport has a runway that has the designation 13/31 and measures 1,589 by 30 meters.[1] The terminal occupies 190 square meters and includes a waiting room for a maximum of 50 passengers.[2].
