Introduction
The Interpretation Center of Memory and Tragedy of Armero (CIMTA), located in the Camposanto&action=edit&redlink=1 "Camposanto (Colombia) (not yet written)") of Armero, remembers the disaster that occurred in this town, after the eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano in 1985.
It is the only Interpretation Center for the Memory of a natural disaster in the world located in the place where the disaster occurred. It is made up of a series of memory references, in the form of billboards, that present both the characters of the small city and its most representative places - such as the Bolívar Theater, the Playground, the Country Club, or the church, among others. These fences are installed at the exact point where these places were. Now the Armerite, the visitor or the tourist can locate themselves spatially in the old Armero to understand and interpret what the so-called White City of Colombia was like. In this way, it contributes to the mourning of victims and survivors and generates a new cultural tourism.
On the other hand, in a disaster prevention effort, it presents in a very didactic way what a volcano is like inside, what the tragedy was like and what needs to be done in case it erupts, among other educational and pedagogical concepts.
The Cultural Tourist Route of Memory will pass through there), and this will be the main contribution of Armero - Guayabal to such an initiative. A new tourist destination that, together with the CIMTA, is expected to generate social and economic development in a depressed area after the last eruption of Ruiz.
The Armero Memory and Tragedy Interpretation Center (also known as CIMTA) is developed by the Armando Armero Foundation, directed by Francisco González, with the support of the AECI, Valtec, Casa América Catalunya and the city council of Olot (Spain), among other Colombian and international organizations and private companies.
