A 1996 United Nations report estimated that there are more than 800 million people worldwide who grow food and raise livestock in cities.[14] Although some urban farms have paid employees, most rely heavily on volunteer labor, and some are run solely by volunteers. Other urban farms operate as associations with local authorities.

In 1972, one of the first urban farms was created in Kentish Town, London. It combines farm animals with garden spaces, a complement inspired by children's farms in the Netherlands. Other urban farms followed in London and the United Kingdom. In Australia, there are several urban farms in several capital cities. In Melbourne, the Collingwood Children's Farm was created in 1979 in the Abbotsford Precinct Heritage Farmlands (the APHF),[15] oldest continuously cultivated land in Victoria "Victoria (Australia)"), cultivated since 1838.

In 2010, the world's largest privately owned and operated rooftop farm was built and opened in New York City, followed by an even larger location in 2012.[16] Both were the result of municipal programs such as the Green Roof Tax Reduction Program[17]​ and the Green Infrastructure Grant Program.[18]​.

Hydroponic rooftop farms are appearing in Singapore (which are also based on vertical farming).[19]​ The goal is to rejuvenate hitherto marginalized areas and workforce. At the same time, high-end produce will be grown and harvested without pesticides.[20]​.

Local economies

Localized food production in urban and peri-urban areas creates strong local economies by creating jobs, and is also a way to increase community participation in the management of their own resources to reduce poverty.[21]​[22]​ Some researchers indicate that these production centers should reduce the unemployment rate in towns and large cities. Some schools like Waldorf have already incorporated the topic into their curriculum. Urban agriculture projects are beginning to open a new labor market in areas that have been negatively affected by outsourcing of jobs.

Bogotá, capital of Colombia, the second most biodiverse country on the planet[23]​ has become a benchmark in Latin America in urban agriculture, there are more than 20 thousand orchards in the city[24]​ and more than 4 thousand orchards.[25]​.

The current industrial agriculture system is characterized by high energy costs due to the need for transportation. The energy used to transport food would be drastically reduced if cities produced their food locally.

Although the aroma and taste of local products are subjective, many participants in urban agriculture report that they prefer the taste of those local products, or organic food, than those of industrial production.
