Industrial risk audit
Introduction
A Safety Management System or SGSO (in English: Safety Management System or SMS) is a systematic approach to the management of operational safety in different sectors and industries, including the organization, lines of responsibility, necessary policies and procedures as well as an implementation plan.
An Operational Safety Management System is applied in various sectors where safety is critical due to the inherent risk of their operations and the need to protect people, property and the environment. The major sectors where an SGS is implemented include:
-
- Rail Sector: Guarantee safety in railway operations, managing risks associated with infrastructure, rolling stock and the operation of trains on the national and international network. Among the regulatory entities is the European Union Railway Agency (ERA), which establishes guidelines and carries out audits to verify compliance, promoting the harmonization of safety in the railway systems of the Member States of the European Union.
-
- Civil Aviation: This sector uses the SGS to reduce risks in flight operations, including air traffic management, airports and aircraft maintenance, under the regulation of organizations such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
-
- Oil and Gas Industry: In hydrocarbon exploration, production, refining and transportation activities, the SGS is essential to avoid serious accidents that could cause environmental damage, human and economic losses.
-
- Nuclear Sector: Operational safety is critical to avoid nuclear accidents and protect the population and the environment from radiation, applying SGS in nuclear power plants and other facilities where radioactive material is handled. In this sector, the coordinating work of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is notable.
-
- Maritime Transport: In this sector, the SGS is implemented to manage the safety of navigation and operations on the high seas, including accident prevention and handling of dangerous cargo, regulated by organizations such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
