Industrial circuit breakers
Definition
Introduction to Industrial Circuit Breakers
Industrial circuit breakers are electrical devices designed to protect high-power electrical circuits against overloads, short circuits, and electrical failures in industrial environments. Its main function is to interrupt the flow of current when abnormal conditions are detected that could damage the installation or put the safety of people and equipment at risk.
These circuit breakers are differentiated from residential circuit breakers by their ability to handle much higher electrical currents, in addition to having specific characteristics that allow their use in complex and demanding industrial installations, where reliability and speed of disconnection are vital.
Technical Characteristics of Industrial Circuit Breakers
Current and voltage capacity
Industrial circuit breakers are designed to withstand nominal currents that can vary from tens to thousands of amperes, adapting to the demands of large electrical installations. In addition, they are prepared to operate at high voltage levels, generally in medium and low voltage systems used in industry.
Interrupting capacity, i.e. the maximum current that the circuit breaker can interrupt without damage, is a key parameter. In industrial environments, this capacity must be considerably high to guarantee adequate protection against possible serious faults such as high-intensity short circuits.
Types and technologies of industrial circuit breakers
There are several types of industrial circuit breakers depending on their technology and application, the most common being thermomagnetic, electromagnetic, electronic and vacuum circuit breakers. Each type offers different advantages in terms of sensitivity, response speed and durability.
Thermomagnetic circuit breakers combine a thermal mechanism to detect prolonged overloads and an electromagnetic one to detect instantaneous short circuits. For their part, electronic circuit breakers incorporate more advanced control systems that allow precise adjustments and remote monitoring, ideal for smart installations.
