Key components of individual HVAC systems include furnaces or boilers for heat generation, air conditioners for cooling, air handlers with fans for circulation, and ductwork for optional air distribution.[5] Furnaces and boilers produce hot air or water, respectively, while air conditioners utilize refrigerant cycles for cooling; air handlers then condition and move the air, with ducts channeling it to rooms if needed.[9] These elements integrate into compact units, enabling straightforward assembly and operation tailored to the building's requirements.[10]

District networks

District networks, also known as district energy systems, represent centralized HVAC infrastructures that supply thermal energy for heating and cooling to multiple buildings via a utility-like distribution system. These networks utilize one or more central plants to generate hot water, steam, or chilled water, which is then delivered through insulated underground pipelines to end-users, enabling efficient shared resource management across large areas. Unlike individual building systems, district networks operate on a utility scale, treating thermal energy as a service similar to electricity or water supply.[8][13]

The primary components of district networks include central generation facilities equipped with boilers for heat production, chillers for cooling, and circulation pumps to propel the thermal medium through the system. Insulated pipelines form the backbone of the distribution network, minimizing heat loss while transporting hot or chilled water to buildings, where heat exchangers, meters, and valves enable localized transfer and usage control. These elements allow for flexible operation, such as seasonal switching between heating and cooling modes, and integration with advanced controls for optimized flow.[8][13]

District networks find widespread application in high-density urban areas, such as central business districts in cities like New York and Boston, as well as university campuses (e.g., University of Rochester), hospitals, airports, military bases, and industrial zones. In these settings, the systems support diverse thermal demands from mixed-use developments, promoting compact urban growth by reducing the need for on-site equipment in each building. For instance, over 660 such systems operated in the United States as of 2012, and more than 700 as of 2024, serving sectors with consistent year-round energy needs.[8][14][15]

A key benefit of district networks is their economies of scale, achieved through large-scale equipment that operates at higher efficiencies—reaching 65% to 80% when combined with cogeneration—compared to the national average of 51% for separate heat and power generation. This leads to reduced greenhouse gas emissions, lower peak electricity demands, and enhanced energy security, as demonstrated by systems that continued operating during events like Hurricane Harvey in 2017. However, challenges include substantial upfront infrastructure costs for pipelines and plants, along with regulatory barriers related to permitting, land use, and emissions management.[8][13][16]

Prominent examples include cogeneration plants that simultaneously produce electricity and thermal energy, maximizing resource use; the Texas Medical Center in Houston, for instance, employs a 48 MW combined heat and power system to deliver heating and cooling to 18 healthcare facilities, illustrating the integration potential in institutional clusters. Similarly, District Energy St. Paul in Minnesota combines multiple renewable sources for urban district service, highlighting adaptability to local conditions.[8]

Early developments

The earliest known systems for heating and ventilation relied on passive architectural designs that harnessed natural elements to maintain comfortable indoor environments. In ancient Rome, the hypocaust system represented a pioneering form of underfloor heating, where hot air from a furnace circulated through channels beneath raised floors supported by brick pillars, warming rooms without direct smoke exposure.[17] This method, dating back to at least the 1st century BCE, was widely used in public baths, villas, and military structures across the Roman Empire, demonstrating an early understanding of convective heat transfer for space conditioning.[18] Similarly, in ancient Persia, wind catchers—known as badgirs—served as effective ventilation devices, consisting of tall towers with multiple openings that captured prevailing winds and directed cooled air into buildings while expelling hot air through downward shafts.[19] These structures, evident from the medieval period around the 14th century CE, provided natural cooling in arid climates by promoting airflow and evaporative effects, often integrated with qanats (underground water channels) for enhanced humidity control.[20]

The transition toward mechanical systems began in the 17th and 18th centuries, coinciding with advancements in thermodynamics and engineering that laid the groundwork for powered heating and cooling. Angier March Perkins, an American-born engineer working in London, developed one of the first viable hot water central heating systems in the 1830s, using high-pressure boilers and wrought-iron pipes to circulate heated water through buildings, offering a safer and more uniform alternative to steam or direct coal fires.[25] Installed in prominent structures like the British Museum, Perkins' "high-pressure hot water" method reduced explosion risks associated with steam while enabling zoned control, reflecting the era's push for scalable indoor climate management amid coal-powered expansion.[26] This period's mechanization, fueled by steam technology and material advances like cast iron, transformed HVAC from localized, labor-intensive practices to centralized systems, setting the stage for broader adoption in residential and commercial settings. Following World War II, widespread adoption of ducted air systems accelerated due to economic growth and housing booms, with high-velocity duct designs minimizing space requirements in office buildings. For instance, the 1948 Equitable Building in Portland featured Carrier's induction units with compact ducts, reducing operating costs by 10-25% compared to earlier all-air systems.[28] By the 1950s, these ducted systems became standard in commercial and residential structures, enabling efficient distribution of conditioned air.[28]

Mid-20th-century advancements focused on energy efficiency amid growing resource demands, including the development of heat pumps in the 1930s, which reversed refrigeration cycles to extract heat from external sources for heating. Early prototypes, such as those using dry labyrinth piston compressors introduced by Sulzer, enabled practical applications without lubricants, paving the way for reversible HVAC operations.[29] The 1970s energy crises, triggered by oil embargoes, prompted regulatory responses, with ASHRAE releasing Standard 90 in 1975 as the first comprehensive energy conservation guideline for buildings. This standard addressed HVAC inefficiencies by mandating minimum performance levels for systems, influencing federal codes and reducing overall energy use in new constructions by up to 30% in targeted applications.

In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, environmental concerns drove refrigerant reforms and system innovations, exemplified by the 1987 Montreal Protocol, which phased out chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) due to their ozone-depleting effects. Recent trends since 2020 emphasize sustainability through renewables and artificial intelligence (AI), with HVAC systems increasingly coupled to solar photovoltaics and geothermal sources for net-zero performance. AI-driven optimization, using machine learning for predictive maintenance and load balancing, supports energy reductions while integrating variable renewable inputs, as demonstrated in building simulations that synchronize HVAC with on-site solar generation.[33] These advancements, supported by standards like ASHRAE 90.1 updates, prioritize decarbonization, with AI models forecasting demand to minimize grid strain from intermittent renewables.[33] Policy measures, such as the US Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021 allocating funds for HVAC electrification and efficiency upgrades, have further accelerated these trends as of 2025.[34]

Heat generation

Heat generation in HVAC systems primarily involves converting energy from fuels or electricity into thermal energy to warm indoor spaces. The most common methods include combustion of fossil fuels, electric resistance heating, and heat extraction via heat pumps from ambient sources. These approaches vary in efficiency, cost, and environmental impact, with selection depending on factors like fuel availability and climate.[35]

Combustion-based systems, such as gas furnaces and oil boilers, produce heat through the burning of natural gas, propane, or heating oil. In natural gas combustion, the primary reaction is the oxidation of methane: \ceCH4+2O2−>CO2+2H2O\ce{CH4 + 2O2 -> CO2 + 2H2O}\ceCH4+2O2−>CO2+2H2O, releasing significant heat energy. Oil boilers similarly combust fuel oil to generate hot combustion gases that transfer heat to water or air. These systems are widely used due to the abundance of fossil fuels and their ability to deliver high heat output rapidly.[36]

Furnaces are key equipment in combustion heating, with forced-air types circulating heated air through ducts via a blower. Condensing furnaces achieve efficiencies over 90% by recovering latent heat from exhaust gases, condensing water vapor to extract additional energy before venting. Boilers, used for hydronic systems, come in fire-tube designs where hot gases pass through tubes surrounded by water, or water-tube variants where water flows through tubes exposed to combustion gases; fire-tube boilers are more common in residential HVAC for their simplicity and lower pressure requirements. Efficiency for both furnaces and boilers is measured by Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE), which represents the percentage of fuel energy converted to useful heat over a year—modern units often exceed 90% AFUE.[35][37][38]

Electric resistance heaters generate heat by passing current through resistive elements, converting electrical energy directly to thermal energy with 100% efficiency at the point of use, though overall system efficiency depends on electricity generation sources. These include baseboard heaters, electric furnaces, and radiant panels, suitable for smaller spaces or as supplemental heating.[39]

Heat pumps provide heat by extracting it from ambient air, ground, or water sources and transferring it indoors using a refrigeration cycle, often achieving efficiencies two to three times higher than resistance heating since they move heat rather than generate it. Air-source heat pumps, for instance, can reduce electricity use for heating by up to 75% compared to electric resistance systems.[40]

Emerging methods include solar thermal collectors, which absorb sunlight to heat a transfer fluid for domestic hot water or space heating integration in HVAC systems. Flat-plate or evacuated-tube collectors can preheat water, reducing reliance on conventional fuels and improving overall system sustainability. Once generated, heat is typically distributed via air ducts or hydronic loops to end-use areas.[41]

Distribution methods

In heating systems, distribution methods transport thermal energy from the source, such as a boiler, to occupied spaces through dedicated networks designed for efficient delivery. These methods primarily include hydronic and air-based approaches, which differ in their medium of transport—water or air—and influence factors like installation complexity, response time, and overall system performance.[42]

Hydronic systems circulate heated water or steam through a closed loop of pipes to transfer heat to rooms via emitters like radiators, baseboard convectors, or underfloor heating loops. In hot water systems, a pump drives the fluid from the boiler through insulated piping to these emitters, where heat is released primarily by convection and radiation, allowing for even temperature distribution without drafts. Steam systems operate similarly but rely on natural pressure differences for circulation, though they are less common in modern installations due to higher energy use. Underfloor hydronic loops embed PEX or similar plastic pipes in concrete slabs or flooring, providing radiant heating that warms surfaces directly for improved comfort.[42][43][44]

For instance, in a multi-story home, dampers close off unused zones to direct heat where needed, improving comfort and reducing waste; this setup requires a central control panel to coordinate signals and prevent pressure imbalances.[47][48]

Efficiency in distribution methods hinges on minimizing losses through insulation and optimizing circulation energy. Pipes and ducts insulated with materials like fiberglass or foam can reduce heat loss by up to 20-30% in unconditioned spaces, while variable-speed pumps in hydronic systems and efficient fans in air-based setups lower electricity use by adjusting to demand—potentially saving 10-15% on operating costs compared to constant-speed alternatives. Regular maintenance, such as bleeding air from hydronic lines or cleaning duct filters, further sustains performance.[42][49][43]

Safety risks

Heating systems pose several safety risks, primarily stemming from combustion processes in fuel-burning appliances such as furnaces and boilers. Incomplete combustion occurs when there is insufficient oxygen during fuel burning, leading to the production of carbon monoxide (CO) instead of carbon dioxide. This reaction can be represented as 2C+O2→2CO2C + O_2 \rightarrow 2CO2C+O2​→2CO, where carbon from the fuel partially oxidizes.[50][51] Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that binds to hemoglobin in the blood, preventing oxygen transport and causing poisoning symptoms ranging from headaches to death.[52][53] Common sources include malfunctioning gas furnaces, blocked vents, or cracked heat exchangers in heating systems.[54] Proper flue gas venting is essential to expel these byproducts outdoors, with requirements specifying termination heights of at least 5 feet above the appliance draft hood and clearances from combustibles to prevent re-entry into living spaces.[55]

Fire hazards in heating systems often arise from overheating in furnaces, where restricted airflow from dirty filters or blocked ducts causes excessive temperatures that can ignite nearby materials.[56] The National Fire Protection Association reports that heating equipment contributes to thousands of home fires annually, many linked to such overheating or improper installation.[56] In hybrid systems combining furnaces with heat pumps, flammable refrigerants like hydrocarbons introduce additional ignition risks if leaks occur near heat sources, potentially leading to combustion upon exposure to sparks or open flames.[57][58]

Other dangers include scalding from hot water heating systems, where temperatures exceeding 120°F can cause severe burns in seconds, particularly affecting children and the elderly during bathing or faucet use.[59][60] Electrical faults in electric heaters, such as frayed cords or overloaded circuits, can result in shocks, short circuits, or fires, especially if extension cords are misused.[61][62]

Mitigation strategies focus on detection, compliance, and maintenance. Carbon monoxide detectors, placed near sleeping areas and fuel-burning appliances, provide early warnings by alarming at concentrations above 70 parts per million, allowing prompt evacuation and system shutdown.[63] Building codes like NFPA 54, the National Fuel Gas Code, mandate safe installation practices for gas appliances, including proper venting, pressure regulation, and combustion air supply to minimize risks.[64] Regular professional inspections, recommended annually before heating season, identify issues like heat exchanger cracks or venting blockages, ensuring system integrity and reducing hazard potential.[65]

Mechanical systems

Mechanical ventilation systems utilize powered equipment, such as fans and ducts, to actively circulate and exchange air within buildings, ensuring adequate indoor air quality and comfort.

These systems are categorized into exhaust, supply, and balanced types, each designed to address specific airflow needs. Exhaust systems remove contaminated air from indoor spaces using fans to draw air out, creating negative pressure that pulls in fresh air through leaks or openings. Supply systems, conversely, introduce filtered outdoor air into the building via fans, generating positive pressure to expel stale air. Balanced systems combine both exhaust and supply functions with equal airflow rates, maintaining neutral pressure and often incorporating energy recovery ventilators for efficiency. Positive pressure designs prevent infiltration of unconditioned air by slightly over-pressurizing interiors, while negative pressure setups isolate contaminants by drawing air inward from cleaner sources.[66][67]

Key components include fans, ducts, and dampers, which work together to control airflow. Fans are primarily centrifugal or axial types; centrifugal fans accelerate air radially outward, providing high pressure for overcoming duct resistance in complex systems, whereas axial fans propel air parallel to the shaft, offering high volume at lower pressure for simpler applications. By integrating architectural features that harness environmental drivers, passive ventilation supports sustainable building design, particularly in moderate climates where outdoor conditions are conducive to natural air exchange.[76]

Key methods in passive ventilation include the stack effect, wind-driven ventilation, and evaporative cooling towers. The stack effect relies on the principle of thermal buoyancy, where warmer indoor air rises due to lower density compared to cooler outdoor air, creating a pressure differential that draws fresh air in through lower openings and exhausts stale air via upper vents. This pressure difference, ΔP, can be approximated by the formula:

Atria and solar chimneys act as vertical channels to amplify the stack effect, collecting warm air at the top for expulsion while pulling cooler air upward from below, often with dark absorptive surfaces to boost buoyancy. Operable windows and vents enable controlled cross-ventilation, where openings on opposite or adjacent facades allow prevailing winds to flow through occupied spaces, ideally with inlet areas at least 5% of floor area for effective exchange. Building orientation aligns with dominant wind patterns to maximize cross-ventilation potential, such as positioning facades perpendicular to breezes, while overhangs or louvers prevent unwanted solar gain or rain ingress.[79][80]

Passive ventilation finds primary applications in residential structures and green buildings, where it reduces reliance on mechanical HVAC by 20–50% in suitable conditions, contributing to certifications like LEED or Passive House standards. In homes, simple operable windows and roof vents provide daily air renewal, while green buildings employ advanced features like vegetated atria for enhanced cooling in eco-friendly developments. However, limitations arise in polluted urban environments, where drawing in contaminated outdoor air can compromise indoor quality, and in extreme climates with high humidity, low winds, or temperature swings, which diminish buoyancy or evaporation efficacy and may necessitate supplemental systems.[81][82][83]

Health impacts

Ventilation systems are essential for maintaining indoor air quality by diluting airborne contaminants, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulates, through the introduction of fresh outdoor air. This process reduces the concentration of these pollutants, which can otherwise accumulate and pose health risks to occupants. For instance, adequate ventilation helps prevent the buildup of VOCs emitted from building materials, furnishings, and cleaning products, thereby lowering exposure levels that contribute to irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat. [86]

The effectiveness of dilution is often measured by air changes per hour (ACH), which indicates how frequently the indoor air is replaced with outdoor air. In office environments, typical ACH range from 4-6 to ensure sufficient contaminant removal while balancing energy use, derived from ASHRAE Standard 62.1 ventilation rates, with higher rates providing greater protection against pollutant accumulation. [87] [88]

Ventilation also plays a critical role in mitigating the transmission of airborne diseases, such as COVID-19, which spreads primarily through inhalation of virus-laden aerosols generated by infected individuals. By increasing outdoor air intake and air circulation, ventilation dilutes these aerosols, reducing the risk of infection in shared indoor spaces. [89] [90] When combined with filtration, higher MERV ratings—such as MERV 13 or above—enhance efficacy by capturing a significant portion of viral particles (up to 90% for particles 1-10 microns in size), further limiting disease spread. [91] [92]

Inadequate ventilation leads to elevated concentrations of indoor pollutants, contributing to sick building syndrome (SBS), a condition characterized by symptoms like headaches, fatigue, and respiratory irritation among occupants. [93] Poorly ventilated spaces often result in carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels exceeding 1000 ppm, a metric indicating insufficient fresh air supply and correlating with increased SBS symptoms and reduced cognitive performance. [94] [95] Chronic exposure in such environments can exacerbate respiratory issues, including asthma aggravation and higher susceptibility to infections. [96]

Mechanical ventilation systems implement these rates to achieve the prescribed ACH and maintain safe indoor conditions. [99]

Cooling processes

Cooling in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems primarily involves removing heat from indoor spaces to maintain comfort, achieved through thermodynamic cycles that transfer thermal energy to the outdoors. The most common approach is the vapor-compression refrigeration cycle, which uses a circulating refrigerant to absorb heat indoors and reject it externally. This is followed by condensation, where the hot vapor releases heat to the ambient environment through a condenser coil, cooling and condensing into a high-pressure liquid. The expansion stage then occurs via a throttling device, such as an expansion valve, which reduces the pressure and temperature of the liquid refrigerant, creating a low-pressure mixture ready for evaporation. Free cooling leverages naturally cooler ambient conditions to minimize mechanical input. System types

Filtration techniques

For instance, IIR efforts support the adoption of low-global-warming-potential refrigerants in HVAC applications, aligning with broader sustainability goals.[166]

Pivotal treaties address ozone depletion and climate impacts from HVAC refrigerants. The Montreal Protocol, adopted in 1987 and ratified by all 198 UN member states, phases out ozone-depleting substances like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) used in refrigeration and air conditioning, with amendments in 1990 and 1992 accelerating timelines for developing countries.[167] Subsequent adjustments, including the 1999 Beijing Amendment and the 2007 Montreal Adjustment, extended and accelerated controls to HCFCs, significantly reducing their production and consumption in HVAC systems. The Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, agreed in 2016 and entering into force in 2019, targets hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs)—potent greenhouse gases common in modern HVAC refrigerants—by mandating a phasedown of up to 80-85% of production and consumption by 2047, depending on country groups, to avert 0.3-0.5°C of global warming by 2100.[168]

Harmonization efforts build on these foundations to align regulations globally. The EU F-Gas Regulation (EU) 2024/573, effective from March 2024, imposes stricter HFC phase-down quotas, bans on high-global-warming-potential substances in new HVAC equipment, and leakage prevention measures, serving as a benchmark that inspires equivalent policies in regions like California and Japan to facilitate international trade and technology transfer.[170] These initiatives, often referenced in regional practices for local adaptations, ensure progressive global alignment in HVAC sustainability.[171]

Regional practices

In the United States, HVAC practices are governed by federal and local regulations, with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) enforcing Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, which mandates certification for technicians handling refrigerants to prevent ozone depletion and emissions.[172] The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) plays a central role through its societies and technical committees, developing standards for system design, energy efficiency, and indoor air quality that influence building codes nationwide.[173] Additionally, the International Mechanical Code (IMC), published by the International Code Council (ICC), sets minimum requirements for mechanical systems, including HVAC installations, ventilation, and exhaust systems, adopted variably by states and municipalities.[174]

In the United Kingdom, regulations emphasize environmental protection and professional standards, particularly through the F-Gas Regulations, which control the use, recovery, and recycling of fluorinated greenhouse gases in refrigeration and air conditioning systems to reduce emissions.[175] The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) serves as a key professional body, providing guidance on HVAC design, installation, and maintenance via its technical memoranda and guides, ensuring compliance with building regulations.

Australia's HVAC sector features stringent licensing and standards bodies, with the Australian Institute of Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heating (AIRAH) establishing best practice guidelines for system efficiency and safety. Refrigerant handling requires ARCtick licensing administered by the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC), which verifies technician competency through training and audits to comply with ozone protection laws.[176]

In Asia, regional variations include India's Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), which incorporates HVAC provisions into the National Building Code, focusing on safety, energy efficiency, and adaptive thermal comfort in air conditioning systems.[177] In the Philippines, the National Building Code (PD 1096), administered by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), regulates HVAC installations in buildings to ensure structural integrity, ventilation, and fire safety.[178]

Technician training differs significantly across regions; in the US, the North American Technician Excellence (NATE) certification emphasizes practical exams in HVAC installation and service, requiring core and specialty tests for validation.[179] In contrast, the UK's National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in refrigeration and air conditioning, offered through bodies like City & Guilds, focuses on workplace-based assessments at levels 2 and 3 for installation and maintenance competencies.[180] Code enforcement also varies: the US relies on state-level adoption of model codes like the IMC with local inspections, while the UK uses a national building regulations framework with delegated oversight; Australia enforces uniform national standards through state licensing but allows regional adaptations, leading to differences in compliance verification and penalties.

Individual systems

Individual systems, also known as local or standalone HVAC units, are self-contained setups that independently manage heating, cooling, and ventilation for a single building or specific zone without relying on external networks.[5] These systems are typically installed within or adjacent to the conditioned space, allowing them to serve individual areas efficiently while maintaining indoor air quality and thermal comfort.[7] Unlike larger-scale alternatives such as district networks that supply multiple buildings from a central plant, individual systems focus on localized operation.[8]

Key components of individual HVAC systems include furnaces or boilers for heat generation, air conditioners for cooling, air handlers with fans for circulation, and ductwork for optional air distribution.[5] Furnaces and boilers produce hot air or water, respectively, while air conditioners utilize refrigerant cycles for cooling; air handlers then condition and move the air, with ducts channeling it to rooms if needed.[9] These elements integrate into compact units, enabling straightforward assembly and operation tailored to the building's requirements.[10]

Such systems find primary applications in residential settings like single-family homes and apartments, small commercial spaces such as offices and hotels, and retrofit projects in existing structures where minimal disruption is essential.[5] In residential use, they provide zoned comfort without extensive renovations, while in small commercial environments, they support precise temperature control for varied occupancy.[11] Retrofitting with individual units is advantageous for older buildings, as it avoids major infrastructure changes.[12]

Advantages of individual systems include simpler installation due to their modular design and enhanced control over specific zones, allowing customized comfort levels.[5] However, disadvantages encompass higher per-unit costs compared to centralized options and potential redundancy in maintenance across multiple units.[5]

Representative examples include split air conditioning units, which separate indoor evaporators from outdoor condensers connected by refrigerant lines, ideal for homes without ductwork.[11] Packaged rooftop systems, conversely, house all components in a single outdoor cabinet mounted on building roofs, commonly used in small commercial applications for efficient space utilization.[11]

District networks

District networks, also known as district energy systems, represent centralized HVAC infrastructures that supply thermal energy for heating and cooling to multiple buildings via a utility-like distribution system. These networks utilize one or more central plants to generate hot water, steam, or chilled water, which is then delivered through insulated underground pipelines to end-users, enabling efficient shared resource management across large areas. Unlike individual building systems, district networks operate on a utility scale, treating thermal energy as a service similar to electricity or water supply.[8][13]

The primary components of district networks include central generation facilities equipped with boilers for heat production, chillers for cooling, and circulation pumps to propel the thermal medium through the system. Insulated pipelines form the backbone of the distribution network, minimizing heat loss while transporting hot or chilled water to buildings, where heat exchangers, meters, and valves enable localized transfer and usage control. These elements allow for flexible operation, such as seasonal switching between heating and cooling modes, and integration with advanced controls for optimized flow.[8][13]

District networks find widespread application in high-density urban areas, such as central business districts in cities like New York and Boston, as well as university campuses (e.g., University of Rochester), hospitals, airports, military bases, and industrial zones. In these settings, the systems support diverse thermal demands from mixed-use developments, promoting compact urban growth by reducing the need for on-site equipment in each building. For instance, over 660 such systems operated in the United States as of 2012, and more than 700 as of 2024, serving sectors with consistent year-round energy needs.[8][14][15]

A key benefit of district networks is their economies of scale, achieved through large-scale equipment that operates at higher efficiencies—reaching 65% to 80% when combined with cogeneration—compared to the national average of 51% for separate heat and power generation. This leads to reduced greenhouse gas emissions, lower peak electricity demands, and enhanced energy security, as demonstrated by systems that continued operating during events like Hurricane Harvey in 2017. However, challenges include substantial upfront infrastructure costs for pipelines and plants, along with regulatory barriers related to permitting, land use, and emissions management.[8][13][16]

Prominent examples include cogeneration plants that simultaneously produce electricity and thermal energy, maximizing resource use; the Texas Medical Center in Houston, for instance, employs a 48 MW combined heat and power system to deliver heating and cooling to 18 healthcare facilities, illustrating the integration potential in institutional clusters. Similarly, District Energy St. Paul in Minnesota combines multiple renewable sources for urban district service, highlighting adaptability to local conditions.[8]

Early developments

The earliest known systems for heating and ventilation relied on passive architectural designs that harnessed natural elements to maintain comfortable indoor environments. In ancient Rome, the hypocaust system represented a pioneering form of underfloor heating, where hot air from a furnace circulated through channels beneath raised floors supported by brick pillars, warming rooms without direct smoke exposure.[17] This method, dating back to at least the 1st century BCE, was widely used in public baths, villas, and military structures across the Roman Empire, demonstrating an early understanding of convective heat transfer for space conditioning.[18] Similarly, in ancient Persia, wind catchers—known as badgirs—served as effective ventilation devices, consisting of tall towers with multiple openings that captured prevailing winds and directed cooled air into buildings while expelling hot air through downward shafts.[19] These structures, evident from the medieval period around the 14th century CE, provided natural cooling in arid climates by promoting airflow and evaporative effects, often integrated with qanats (underground water channels) for enhanced humidity control.[20]

The transition toward mechanical systems began in the 17th and 18th centuries, coinciding with advancements in thermodynamics and engineering that laid the groundwork for powered heating and cooling. For instance, the 1948 Equitable Building in Portland featured Carrier's induction units with compact ducts, reducing operating costs by 10-25% compared to earlier all-air systems.[28] By the 1950s, these ducted systems became standard in commercial and residential structures, enabling efficient distribution of conditioned air.[28]

Mid-20th-century advancements focused on energy efficiency amid growing resource demands, including the development of heat pumps in the 1930s, which reversed refrigeration cycles to extract heat from external sources for heating. Early prototypes, such as those using dry labyrinth piston compressors introduced by Sulzer, enabled practical applications without lubricants, paving the way for reversible HVAC operations.[29] The 1970s energy crises, triggered by oil embargoes, prompted regulatory responses, with ASHRAE releasing Standard 90 in 1975 as the first comprehensive energy conservation guideline for buildings. This standard addressed HVAC inefficiencies by mandating minimum performance levels for systems, influencing federal codes and reducing overall energy use in new constructions by up to 30% in targeted applications.

In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, environmental concerns drove refrigerant reforms and system innovations, exemplified by the 1987 Montreal Protocol, which phased out chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) due to their ozone-depleting effects. Recent trends since 2020 emphasize sustainability through renewables and artificial intelligence (AI), with HVAC systems increasingly coupled to solar photovoltaics and geothermal sources for net-zero performance. AI-driven optimization, using machine learning for predictive maintenance and load balancing, supports energy reductions while integrating variable renewable inputs, as demonstrated in building simulations that synchronize HVAC with on-site solar generation.[33] These advancements, supported by standards like ASHRAE 90.1 updates, prioritize decarbonization, with AI models forecasting demand to minimize grid strain from intermittent renewables.[33] Policy measures, such as the US Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021 allocating funds for HVAC electrification and efficiency upgrades, have further accelerated these trends as of 2025.[34]

Heat generation

Heat generation in HVAC systems primarily involves converting energy from fuels or electricity into thermal energy to warm indoor spaces. The most common methods include combustion of fossil fuels, electric resistance heating, and heat extraction via heat pumps from ambient sources. These approaches vary in efficiency, cost, and environmental impact, with selection depending on factors like fuel availability and climate.[35]

Combustion-based systems, such as gas furnaces and oil boilers, produce heat through the burning of natural gas, propane, or heating oil. In natural gas combustion, the primary reaction is the oxidation of methane: \ceCH4+2O2−>CO2+2H2O\ce{CH4 + 2O2 -> CO2 + 2H2O}\ceCH4+2O2−>CO2+2H2O, releasing significant heat energy. Oil boilers similarly combust fuel oil to generate hot combustion gases that transfer heat to water or air. These systems are widely used due to the abundance of fossil fuels and their ability to deliver high heat output rapidly.[36]

Furnaces are key equipment in combustion heating, with forced-air types circulating heated air through ducts via a blower. Distribution methods

In hot water systems, a pump drives the fluid from the boiler through insulated piping to these emitters, where heat is released primarily by convection and radiation, allowing for even temperature distribution without drafts. Steam systems operate similarly but rely on natural pressure differences for circulation, though they are less common in modern installations due to higher energy use. Pipes and ducts insulated with materials like fiberglass or foam can reduce heat loss by up to 20-30% in unconditioned spaces, while variable-speed pumps in hydronic systems and efficient fans in air-based setups lower electricity use by adjusting to demand—potentially saving 10-15% on operating costs compared to constant-speed alternatives. Regular maintenance, such as bleeding air from hydronic lines or cleaning duct filters, further sustains performance.[42][49][43]

Safety risks

Heating systems pose several safety risks, primarily stemming from combustion processes in fuel-burning appliances such as furnaces and boilers. Incomplete combustion occurs when there is insufficient oxygen during fuel burning, leading to the production of carbon monoxide (CO) instead of carbon dioxide. This reaction can be represented as 2C+O2→2CO2C + O_2 \rightarrow 2CO2C+O2​→2CO, where carbon from the fuel partially oxidizes.[50][51] Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that binds to hemoglobin in the blood, preventing oxygen transport and causing poisoning symptoms ranging from headaches to death.[52][53] Common sources include malfunctioning gas furnaces, blocked vents, or cracked heat exchangers in heating systems.[54] Proper flue gas venting is essential to expel these byproducts outdoors, with requirements specifying termination heights of at least 5 feet above the appliance draft hood and clearances from combustibles to prevent re-entry into living spaces.[55]

Fire hazards in heating systems often arise from overheating in furnaces, where restricted airflow from dirty filters or blocked ducts causes excessive temperatures that can ignite nearby materials.[56] The National Fire Protection Association reports that heating equipment contributes to thousands of home fires annually, many linked to such overheating or improper installation.[56] In hybrid systems combining furnaces with heat pumps, flammable refrigerants like hydrocarbons introduce additional ignition risks if leaks occur near heat sources, potentially leading to combustion upon exposure to sparks or open flames.[57][58]

Other dangers include scalding from hot water heating systems, where temperatures exceeding 120°F can cause severe burns in seconds, particularly affecting children and the elderly during bathing or faucet use.[59][60] Electrical faults in electric heaters, such as frayed cords or overloaded circuits, can result in shocks, short circuits, or fires, especially if extension cords are misused.[61][62]

Mitigation strategies focus on detection, compliance, and maintenance. Carbon monoxide detectors, placed near sleeping areas and fuel-burning appliances, provide early warnings by alarming at concentrations above 70 parts per million, allowing prompt evacuation and system shutdown.[63] Building codes like NFPA 54, the National Fuel Gas Code, mandate safe installation practices for gas appliances, including proper venting, pressure regulation, and combustion air supply to minimize risks.[64] Regular professional inspections, recommended annually before heating season, identify issues like heat exchanger cracks or venting blockages, ensuring system integrity and reducing hazard potential.[65]

Mechanical systems

Mechanical ventilation systems utilize powered equipment, such as fans and ducts, to actively circulate and exchange air within buildings, ensuring adequate indoor air quality and comfort.

These systems are categorized into exhaust, supply, and balanced types, each designed to address specific airflow needs. Exhaust systems remove contaminated air from indoor spaces using fans to draw air out, creating negative pressure that pulls in fresh air through leaks or openings. Supply systems, conversely, introduce filtered outdoor air into the building via fans, generating positive pressure to expel stale air. Balanced systems combine both exhaust and supply functions with equal airflow rates, maintaining neutral pressure and often incorporating energy recovery ventilators for efficiency. Positive pressure designs prevent infiltration of unconditioned air by slightly over-pressurizing interiors, while negative pressure setups isolate contaminants by drawing air inward from cleaner sources.[66][67]

Key components include fans, ducts, and dampers, which work together to control airflow. Fans are primarily centrifugal or axial types; centrifugal fans accelerate air radially outward, providing high pressure for overcoming duct resistance in complex systems, whereas axial fans propel air parallel to the shaft, offering high volume at lower pressure for simpler applications. Passive systems

Key methods in passive ventilation include the stack effect, wind-driven ventilation, and evaporative cooling towers. The stack effect relies on the principle of thermal buoyancy, where warmer indoor air rises due to lower density compared to cooler outdoor air, creating a pressure differential that draws fresh air in through lower openings and exhausts stale air via upper vents. This pressure difference, ΔP, can be approximated by the formula:

Atria and solar chimneys act as vertical channels to amplify the stack effect, collecting warm air at the top for expulsion while pulling cooler air upward from below, often with dark absorptive surfaces to boost buoyancy. Operable windows and vents enable controlled cross-ventilation, where openings on opposite or adjacent facades allow prevailing winds to flow through occupied spaces, ideally with inlet areas at least 5% of floor area for effective exchange. Building orientation aligns with dominant wind patterns to maximize cross-ventilation potential, such as positioning facades perpendicular to breezes, while overhangs or louvers prevent unwanted solar gain or rain ingress.[79][80]

Passive ventilation finds primary applications in residential structures and green buildings, where it reduces reliance on mechanical HVAC by 20–50% in suitable conditions, contributing to certifications like LEED or Passive House standards. In homes, simple operable windows and roof vents provide daily air renewal, while green buildings employ advanced features like vegetated atria for enhanced cooling in eco-friendly developments. However, limitations arise in polluted urban environments, where drawing in contaminated outdoor air can compromise indoor quality, and in extreme climates with high humidity, low winds, or temperature swings, which diminish buoyancy or evaporation efficacy and may necessitate supplemental systems.[81][82][83]

Health impacts

Ventilation systems are essential for maintaining indoor air quality by diluting airborne contaminants, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulates, through the introduction of fresh outdoor air. This process reduces the concentration of these pollutants, which can otherwise accumulate and pose health risks to occupants. For instance, adequate ventilation helps prevent the buildup of VOCs emitted from building materials, furnishings, and cleaning products, thereby lowering exposure levels that contribute to irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat. [86]

The effectiveness of dilution is often measured by air changes per hour (ACH), which indicates how frequently the indoor air is replaced with outdoor air. In office environments, typical ACH range from 4-6 to ensure sufficient contaminant removal while balancing energy use, derived from ASHRAE Standard 62.1 ventilation rates, with higher rates providing greater protection against pollutant accumulation. [87] [88]

Ventilation also plays a critical role in mitigating the transmission of airborne diseases, such as COVID-19, which spreads primarily through inhalation of virus-laden aerosols generated by infected individuals. By increasing outdoor air intake and air circulation, ventilation dilutes these aerosols, reducing the risk of infection in shared indoor spaces. [89] [90] When combined with filtration, higher MERV ratings—such as MERV 13 or above—enhance efficacy by capturing a significant portion of viral particles (up to 90% for particles 1-10 microns in size), further limiting disease spread. [91] [92]

Inadequate ventilation leads to elevated concentrations of indoor pollutants, contributing to sick building syndrome (SBS), a condition characterized by symptoms like headaches, fatigue, and respiratory irritation among occupants. [93] Poorly ventilated spaces often result in carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels exceeding 1000 ppm, a metric indicating insufficient fresh air supply and correlating with increased SBS symptoms and reduced cognitive performance. [94] [95] Chronic exposure in such environments can exacerbate respiratory issues, including asthma aggravation and higher susceptibility to infections. [96]

To address these health impacts, guidelines like ASHRAE Standard 62.1 (2022 edition, with subsequent addenda as of 2025) establish minimum outdoor air requirements based on occupancy and space type, aiming to provide acceptable indoor air quality and prevent adverse health effects, with recent updates emphasizing advanced air cleaning for infectious disease control. [97] [98] For example, the standard specifies ventilation rates such as 5 cubic feet per minute (cfm) per person plus 0.06 cfm per square foot for office spaces, ensuring dilution of contaminants and CO₂. Mechanical ventilation systems implement these rates to achieve the prescribed ACH and maintain safe indoor conditions. [99]

Cooling processes

Cooling in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems primarily involves removing heat from indoor spaces to maintain comfort, achieved through thermodynamic cycles that transfer thermal energy to the outdoors. The most common approach is the vapor-compression refrigeration cycle, which uses a circulating refrigerant to absorb heat indoors and reject it externally. This cycle operates on principles of phase change and pressure differences to efficiently move heat against its natural flow.[100]

The vapor-compression cycle consists of four main stages: compression, condensation, expansion, and evaporation. In the compression stage, a compressor raises the pressure and temperature of the low-pressure refrigerant vapor entering from the evaporator, producing a high-pressure, superheated vapor. This is followed by condensation, where the hot vapor releases heat to the ambient environment through a condenser coil, cooling and condensing into a high-pressure liquid. The expansion stage then occurs via a throttling device, such as an expansion valve, which reduces the pressure and temperature of the liquid refrigerant, creating a low-pressure mixture ready for evaporation. Finally, in the evaporator, the cold refrigerant absorbs heat from the indoor air, evaporating into a vapor and providing the cooling effect before returning to the compressor.[101][100]

Refrigerants in these systems must have suitable thermodynamic properties, such as low boiling points, high latent heat of vaporization, and environmental compatibility. An example is R-410A, a near-azeotropic hydrofluorocarbon blend of 50% R-32 and 50% R-125 by weight, which operates at higher pressures than older refrigerants like R-22 and has zero ozone depletion potential (ODP).[102][103] R-410A was widely used until its phase-out in new systems starting January 1, 2025, under the U.S. EPA's American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act implementing the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, due to its high global warming potential (GWP=2088). In this process, a refrigerant (often water) is absorbed by a solution (e.g., lithium bromide), circulated via a pump, and separated in a generator using heat, enabling evaporation for cooling with a COP of 0.6 to 1.2. This approach is suitable for applications with available low-grade heat, reducing electrical demand.[108]

Desiccant dehumidification complements cooling by targeting moisture removal, which is critical in humid climates to prevent overcooling for latent load management. Desiccants, such as silica gel in rotary wheels, adsorb water vapor from air through sorption, converting latent heat to sensible heat that can then be removed by conventional cooling; regeneration occurs by heating the desiccant to desorb moisture. This method enhances overall system efficiency in ventilation-integrated HVAC, particularly in commercial buildings like supermarkets and hotels.[109]

Free cooling leverages naturally cooler ambient conditions to minimize mechanical input. When outdoor air or water temperatures fall below the required supply temperature, systems can bypass compressors by directly using environmental sources—such as circulating chilled water through a cooling tower or introducing outdoor air via economizers—to absorb indoor heat. This strategy, mandated in certain climates by standards like ASHRAE 90.1 for larger systems, can provide up to 100% of cooling load without refrigeration, significantly lowering energy use during milder seasons.[110]

System types

Air conditioning systems are classified primarily by their configuration, scale, and installation method, ranging from large-scale centralized setups to smaller decentralized units suitable for individual zones. Centralized systems dominate in commercial and large residential applications, while decentralized and hybrid options offer flexibility for varied building needs. Proper sizing ensures efficient operation without over- or under-capacity, based on heat load assessments.

Centralized systems generate cooling at a central location and distribute it throughout the building via ductwork or other means. In chilled water systems, a chiller produces cold water that is pumped to air handlers, which cool and condition air for delivery to multiple zones; these are common in large buildings like offices and hospitals due to their scalability and efficiency in handling high loads. Ducted centralized systems use extensive duct networks to supply conditioned air evenly across the structure, providing uniform temperature control but requiring significant infrastructure.[111] In contrast, some centralized systems employ ductless distribution, such as piping chilled water to fan-coil units in individual zones, reducing duct-related losses. Decentralized split-system designs, meanwhile, eliminate ducts by using refrigerant lines to connect an outdoor unit directly to indoor evaporators, reducing installation costs in retrofits and providing zoned control.[111]

Decentralized systems operate independently in specific areas, ideal for zoned control without central distribution. Window units are compact, self-contained devices installed in window openings, providing localized cooling for single rooms through direct air exchange with the outdoors. Packaged terminal air conditioners (PTACs) are through-the-wall units that integrate compressor, condenser, and evaporator in one package, commonly used in hotels and apartments for individual room conditioning. For multi-zone applications, variable refrigerant flow (VRF) or variable refrigerant volume (VRV) systems employ a single outdoor unit connected to multiple indoor units via refrigerant piping, allowing simultaneous heating and cooling in different zones with precise control.

Hybrid systems combine cooling with heating capabilities, often switching modes to optimize year-round performance. Heat pumps in hybrid configurations reverse the refrigeration cycle to provide both cooling and heating, using the same equipment for efficiency in moderate climates. Packaged terminal air conditioners with heat pump functionality (PTHPs) exemplify this, offering reversible operation in a single through-wall unit for spaces like guest rooms, where electric auxiliary heat supplements low-temperature performance.[112]

Sizing air conditioning systems involves calculating the cooling load in British thermal units per hour (BTU/h) to match the space's thermal demands, ensuring comfort without energy waste. Load calculations account for factors such as room area, insulation quality, solar gain, occupancy, and climate, following standards that recommend detailed Manual J methods over simplistic rules of thumb. For instance, one ton of cooling capacity equals 12,000 BTU/h, typically required to handle the heat removal for freezing one ton of ice in 24 hours, and systems are scaled accordingly—e.g., 1 ton per 400–600 square feet in average conditions, adjusted for superior insulation reducing the need by up to 20–30%.[113][114]

Moisture management

In air conditioning systems, dehumidification primarily occurs through condensation on cooling coils, where moist air passes over cold evaporator surfaces below the dew point temperature, causing water vapor to condense and drain away, thereby reducing indoor humidity levels. This process simultaneously provides sensible cooling by lowering air temperature while addressing latent heat removal associated with moisture.[115]

Engineers use psychrometric charts to calculate dew point temperatures and predict condensation in HVAC design, plotting air properties such as dry-bulb temperature, wet-bulb temperature, and relative humidity to determine when coil surfaces must be maintained below the dew point for effective moisture removal.[116] These charts enable precise sizing of coils and assessment of dehumidification performance across varying environmental conditions.[117]

Humidification in HVAC systems counters low humidity, particularly in dry climates or winter conditions, through methods like steam injection, where pressurized steam is dispersed into airstreams for rapid, isothermal moisture addition without altering air temperature significantly. Ultrasonic humidifiers, an alternative evaporative approach, generate fine water mist via high-frequency vibrations of a piezoelectric transducer, achieving adiabatic humidification that cools the air slightly while increasing humidity.[118] Optimal indoor relative humidity targets range from 30% to 60% for occupant comfort, balancing thermal sensation, skin moisture, and respiratory health.

Excess moisture in HVAC systems promotes mold growth on damp surfaces like coils and ducts, potentially leading to spore dispersal that exacerbates allergies, asthma, and respiratory issues indoors.[119] Dehumidification also imposes energy penalties due to the high latent heat of vaporization for water, approximately hfg≈2257 kJ/kgh_{fg} \approx 2257 , \text{kJ/kg}hfg​≈2257kJ/kg, requiring additional cooling capacity to condense and remove moisture compared to sensible heat removal alone.[120]

Proper maintenance is essential for moisture management, including annual cleaning of evaporator coils to remove dirt and biofilm that impede condensation and airflow, as outlined in ASHRAE Standard 180. Regular inspection and clearing of condensate drain lines prevent backups from algae or debris, which could cause water overflow, system shutdowns, and further moisture accumulation.

Heating optimization

Heating optimization encompasses strategies and technologies designed to minimize energy use in heating systems while ensuring occupant comfort, primarily through targeted load reduction and precise control mechanisms. Key methods include zoning, which divides a building into separate areas with independent temperature controls, allowing heating to be directed only to occupied spaces and avoiding waste in unused areas. For instance, multizone systems in residential settings can achieve space heating energy savings exceeding 10%, with modeling showing up to 12% reduction in newer homes by lowering temperatures by 2°F in less-used zones like basements or upper floors.[121] Programmable thermostats complement zoning by automating temperature setbacks based on occupancy schedules; the U.S. Department of Energy reports that reducing the setpoint by 7°–10°F for 8 hours daily can yield up to 10% annual savings on heating costs, as lower indoor temperatures slow heat loss through building envelopes.[47] High-efficiency furnaces with modulating burners further enhance performance by varying flame intensity to match real-time heating demands, rather than cycling on and off at full capacity; these units typically achieve annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) ratings of 97% or higher, making them less sensitive to duct undersizing and more effective in variable-load scenarios compared to single-stage models.[122][123]

Ground-source heat pumps (GSHPs) represent a highly efficient alternative for heating, leveraging stable subsurface temperatures via buried geothermal loops to extract heat from the ground. These closed-loop systems, often using horizontal or vertical piping filled with a heat-transfer fluid, can attain coefficients of performance (COP) of 4–5, meaning they deliver 4–5 units of heat per unit of electrical energy input under optimal conditions; for example, field tests in a low-load home yielded a heating COP of 4.11 with a sub-slab loop configuration.[124] Performance depends significantly on soil thermal conductivity, which governs heat transfer rates—typical values range from 1–2 W/m·K, with higher conductivity in moist, clay-rich soils enabling better efficiency and shallower loop depths, while drier or sandy soils may reduce COP by up to 11% due to poorer conduction.[124] In cold climates, long-term monitoring of GSHPs shows average seasonal COPs around 3.2–3.4, still outperforming conventional electric resistance heating by a factor of three or more, though thermal imbalances from unbalanced heating loads can degrade efficiency over time without cooling-season recharging.[125]

Efficiency metrics for heating systems include the heating seasonal performance factor (HSPF) for heat pumps, which quantifies the total heating output in British thermal units (BTU) per watt-hour of electricity consumed over a typical heating season, with higher ratings indicating superior performance; U.S. Department of Energy standards require a minimum HSPF of 8.8 for new split-system heat pumps, while top models exceed 10.[126] For furnaces, AFUE measures the percentage of fuel converted to usable heat, with 90%+ models classified as high-efficiency. Government incentives bolster adoption of optimized heating technologies, particularly through the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, which provides tax credits under Section 25C for energy-efficient home improvements, including up to $2,000 for qualifying heat pumps and $1,200 annually for other retrofits like high-efficiency furnaces.[128] The Act's High-Efficiency Electric Home Rebate Program offers point-of-sale rebates up to $8,000 for ENERGY STAR-certified heat pumps in space heating applications, with income-qualified households eligible for 100% coverage up to $14,000 per building, effectively reducing upfront costs for retrofits that cut energy use by 20% or more.[128] These measures, available for improvements completed by December 31, 2025, following modifications by the One Big Beautiful Bill of 2025, prioritize systems meeting or exceeding federal efficiency thresholds to promote widespread heating optimization.[129]

Ventilation recovery

Heat recovery ventilators (HRVs) focus on sensible heat transfer, exchanging temperature differences between exhaust and supply air streams using devices such as rotary wheels or fixed plates. In a rotary wheel HRV, a slowly rotating cylinder with a heat-conducting matrix alternates between the two air streams, allowing sensible heat to pass through without moisture transfer; fixed-plate HRVs employ thin, conductive plates separated by air gaps to achieve similar separation. The effectiveness (ε) of these systems is quantified by the formula:

Common types of ventilation recovery systems include run-around coils and desiccant wheels. Run-around coils consist of two fluid-coupled heat exchangers—one in the exhaust stream and one in the supply stream—circulating a heat transfer fluid (often glycol) to indirectly move sensible and latent energy across potentially distant locations; effectiveness typically falls between 45% and 65%. Desiccant wheels, a form of rotary exchanger coated with moisture-absorbing materials, rotate between streams to adsorb and desorb humidity while transferring heat, achieving up to 80% total energy recovery in suitable conditions.[130]

In commercial buildings such as offices, schools, and hospitals, these recovery systems are widely applied to treat ventilation air, often recovering 70% to 80% of the energy from exhaust streams and thereby reducing overall conditioning energy demands by up to 80% for ventilation loads.[131][132]

Cooling innovations

Solar air conditioning systems represent a sustainable approach to cooling by harnessing renewable energy sources to drive refrigeration cycles, reducing reliance on grid electricity and fossil fuels. Absorption chillers, which utilize solar thermal energy to power the cooling process, operate by employing heat from solar collectors to separate a refrigerant-absorbent pair, such as lithium bromide-water, in a generator, enabling the production of chilled water for air conditioning without mechanical compression. These systems achieve coefficients of performance (COP) typically ranging from 0.6 to 0.8 and are particularly effective in applications where solar heat availability aligns with cooling demands, such as commercial buildings and industrial facilities.[133] In parallel, photovoltaic-driven vapor compression systems convert solar electricity directly into power for conventional compressors, often using DC motors to eliminate inverter losses and enhance efficiency; experimental setups have demonstrated COP values up to 4, with nano-enhanced refrigerants further improving performance by 10-20%.[134] These innovations integrate well with energy storage like phase change materials to address intermittency, making solar AC viable for off-grid and remote installations.[135]

Variable refrigerant volume (VRV) systems, also known as variable refrigerant flow (VRF), advance cooling efficiency through precise modulation of refrigerant flow to multiple indoor units, enabled by inverter-driven compressors that adjust speed to match varying loads. Unlike fixed-speed compressors, inverters in VRV systems optimize part-load operation, where most cooling occurs, achieving integrated energy efficiency ratios (IEER) up to 30 and seasonal energy efficiency ratios (SEER) exceeding 25 in high-performance models, representing 30-40% energy savings over traditional systems.[136] This technology distributes refrigerant dynamically via electronic expansion valves, minimizing energy waste during low-demand periods and supporting simultaneous heating and cooling in heat recovery configurations. Industry standards, such as those from the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI), rate VRV performance using metrics like SEER and IEER to ensure reliable part-load efficiency, with inverter compressors contributing to reduced cycling and lower operational costs in commercial and multi-zone residential applications.[137]

Demand-controlled cooling integrates sensors to dynamically adjust air conditioning output based on real-time occupancy and indoor air quality, optimizing energy use without compromising comfort. Carbon dioxide (CO₂) sensors, in particular, monitor occupant-generated CO₂ levels as a proxy for ventilation needs, modulating fan speeds and cooling capacity to supply only the required fresh air and chilled airflow, potentially reducing HVAC energy consumption by 20-50% in variable-occupancy spaces like offices and schools.[138] Occupancy sensors, often combined with CO₂ detection, employ proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control algorithms to fine-tune operations, ensuring compliance with standards like ASHRAE 62.1 while avoiding overcooling during low-use periods. This approach enhances overall system efficiency by linking cooling delivery to actual demand, with studies showing significant reductions in peak load and improved indoor environmental quality.[139]

Filtration techniques

Filtration techniques in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems primarily involve methods and media designed to capture airborne particles, thereby improving indoor air quality by removing contaminants such as dust, pollen, and fine particulates. These techniques rely on physical barriers or charges to trap particles as air passes through the filter, preventing their circulation within buildings. Mechanical filters, the most common type, use fibrous media—typically synthetic or glass fibers arranged in a pleated or panel configuration—to intercept particles through mechanisms like impaction, interception, and diffusion.[142][143]

Electrostatic filters enhance particle capture by generating an electric charge on the media or fibers, which attracts and holds oppositely charged particles, including smaller ones that might pass through mechanical filters alone. High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters represent an advanced mechanical subtype, consisting of densely packed fine fibers that achieve a minimum efficiency of 99.97% for particles 0.3 micrometers (μm) in diameter, the most penetrating particle size for such media.[144][145][146]

Filter performance is standardized using the Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) scale, which ranges from 1 to 20 and quantifies a filter's ability to capture particles between 0.3 and 10 μm across three size ranges (0.3–1.0 μm, 1.0–3.0 μm, and 3.0–10.0 μm). Such placement ensures particles are captured early in the airflow path, but it introduces resistance known as pressure drop (ΔP), which increases quadratically with air velocity (v) according to the relation ΔP = k v², where k is a filter-specific coefficient influenced by media density and loading. Excessive pressure drop reduces system airflow, strains fans, and elevates energy use, often limiting filter selection to those compatible with the HVAC design's static pressure budget.[149][150]

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Standard 52.2 provides the primary testing protocol for general ventilation air-cleaning devices in the US, evaluating removal efficiency by particle size using challenge aerosols in a controlled duct setup to simulate real-world conditions. In applications targeting allergens like pollen (10–100 μm) and pet dander (1–10 μm), or fine particulate matter such as PM2.5 (≤2.5 μm from combustion sources), MERV 8–13 filters are commonly recommended for residential and commercial HVAC, reducing indoor concentrations by 20–90% depending on rating and airflow. These captures help mitigate health impacts from airborne contaminants, such as respiratory irritation.[151][152]

Maintenance of HVAC filters focuses on monitoring loading—the accumulation of captured particles—to determine replacement schedules, as efficiency initially improves but pressure drop rises with use, potentially compromising performance. Standard fiberglass filters are replaced every 30–90 days in moderate environments, while pleated or HEPA types may last 3–6 months; schedules are adjusted based on visual inspection, runtime hours (e.g., 500–1000 hours for MERV 8), or measured pressure drop thresholds (e.g., 0.5–1.0 inches water gauge). Regular replacement prevents bypass of unfiltered air and maintains system efficiency.[153][154][155]

Cleaning processes

Activated carbon adsorption is a primary method for removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odors from HVAC air streams, utilizing the material's high surface area—typically 4 to 8 million square feet per pound—to physically trap gaseous contaminants with boiling points above 120°F and molecular weights greater than 50.[156][157] This process requires a residence time of 0.07 to 0.14 seconds in packed beds and is most effective for hydrocarbons, aldehydes, and organic acids, though performance diminishes in high-humidity environments above 50% relative humidity due to competition from water molecules.[157] Filters incorporating activated carbon, often 1/8 to 2 inches thick and paired with particle prefilters of at least MERV 7, must be replaced regularly to prevent breakthrough, as capacity is finite and varies by contaminant concentration.[156]

Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) employs UVC light at wavelengths between 200 and 280 nm, with 265 nm optimal, to inactivate airborne pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, and fungi by damaging their DNA and RNA.[158] In HVAC systems, UVGI lamps are installed in ducts or air-handling units to expose moving air streams, where the required dose for inactivation remains consistent whether on surfaces or in airflow.[158] The dosage is calculated as D=I×tD = I \times tD=I×t, where DDD is the UV fluence in μJ/cm², III is the irradiance in μW/cm², and ttt is the exposure time in seconds; for example, higher irradiance is needed for faster air velocities, such as 500 ft/min requiring a 2-foot irradiation zone for 0.25 seconds exposure.[158]

Bipolar ionization generates reactive ions via corona discharge to neutralize gaseous pollutants, including ozone and nitrogen oxides (NOx), by charging and agglomerating contaminants for removal, while advanced designs minimize ozone production to safe levels below 0.05 ppm. However, its effectiveness for pathogen and VOC reduction in HVAC systems remains debated, with concerns from the EPA and researchers as of 2025 about unproven claims, variable performance, and potential health risks from byproducts like ozone if not properly controlled.[157][159][160] Photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) complements this by using UV light (below 380 nm) to activate titanium dioxide catalysts, oxidizing VOCs, ozone, and NOx into harmless byproducts like CO₂ and water, achieving 19% to 85% single-pass removal efficiency depending on humidity and airflow.[157] Both methods require prefiltration to protect components and multiple air passes in HVAC returns for optimal decontamination, though PCO may produce intermediate byproducts if oxidation is incomplete.[157]

Duct cleaning addresses accumulated dust, mold, and biofilms in HVAC systems through mechanical agitation and vacuum collection to achieve visibly clean surfaces, as defined by NADCA standards requiring non-adhered contaminants below 0.75 mg/100 cm² via vacuum testing.[161] Methods include manual brushing or compressed air for accessible areas and robotic tools for hard-to-reach ducts, with wet cleaning (e.g., power washing) permitted on non-porous surfaces to remove mold without spreading spores.[161] Cleaning frequency follows NADCA inspection guidelines: annual for air-handling units in residential and commercial settings, and every two years for supply and return ducts, triggered by visible contamination, odors, or debris discharge; mold remediation adheres to ANSI/IICRC S520 for porous materials.[161]

International frameworks

International frameworks for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) are established by global organizations and treaties that promote standardization, environmental protection, and energy efficiency in the sector. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) develops key technical standards applicable to HVAC components, such as ISO 16890, which classifies air filters for general ventilation based on their efficiency in capturing particulate matter across various size ranges, replacing older European norms and enabling consistent performance evaluation worldwide.[163] This standard tests filters under realistic conditions, including particle loading, to ensure reliable air quality management in HVAC systems.[164]

The International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR), an intergovernmental body founded in 1908, advances scientific and technical knowledge in refrigeration technologies integral to HVAC cooling processes.[165] The IIR publishes bulletins, guidelines, and recommendations on refrigerant safety, energy-efficient systems, and emission reduction, influencing global practices through collaborative research and international congresses. For instance, IIR efforts support the adoption of low-global-warming-potential refrigerants in HVAC applications, aligning with broader sustainability goals.[166]

Pivotal treaties address ozone depletion and climate impacts from HVAC refrigerants. The Montreal Protocol, adopted in 1987 and ratified by all 198 UN member states, phases out ozone-depleting substances like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) used in refrigeration and air conditioning, with amendments in 1990 and 1992 accelerating timelines for developing countries.[167] Subsequent adjustments, including the 1999 Beijing Amendment and the 2007 Montreal Adjustment, extended and accelerated controls to HCFCs, significantly reducing their production and consumption in HVAC systems. The Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, agreed in 2016 and entering into force in 2019, targets hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs)—potent greenhouse gases common in modern HVAC refrigerants—by mandating a phasedown of up to 80-85% of production and consumption by 2047, depending on country groups, to avert 0.3-0.5°C of global warming by 2100.[168]

Energy conservation standards also play a role internationally. The International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), developed by the International Code Council, provides model requirements for building energy efficiency, including HVAC system design, controls, and maintenance to minimize consumption, and is primarily used in the United States. Provisions in the 2021 IECC edition, for example, emphasize high-efficiency HVAC equipment and ventilation rates that balance indoor air quality with energy use.[169]

Harmonization efforts build on these foundations to align regulations globally. The EU F-Gas Regulation (EU) 2024/573, effective from March 2024, imposes stricter HFC phase-down quotas, bans on high-global-warming-potential substances in new HVAC equipment, and leakage prevention measures, serving as a benchmark that inspires equivalent policies in regions like California and Japan to facilitate international trade and technology transfer.[170] These initiatives, often referenced in regional practices for local adaptations, ensure progressive global alignment in HVAC sustainability.[171]

Regional practices

In the United States, HVAC practices are governed by federal and local regulations, with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) enforcing Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, which mandates certification for technicians handling refrigerants to prevent ozone depletion and emissions.[172] The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) plays a central role through its societies and technical committees, developing standards for system design, energy efficiency, and indoor air quality that influence building codes nationwide.[173] Additionally, the International Mechanical Code (IMC), published by the International Code Council (ICC), sets minimum requirements for mechanical systems, including HVAC installations, ventilation, and exhaust systems, adopted variably by states and municipalities.[174]

In the United Kingdom, regulations emphasize environmental protection and professional standards, particularly through the F-Gas Regulations, which control the use, recovery, and recycling of fluorinated greenhouse gases in refrigeration and air conditioning systems to reduce emissions.[175] The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) serves as a key professional body, providing guidance on HVAC design, installation, and maintenance via its technical memoranda and guides, ensuring compliance with building regulations.

Australia's HVAC sector features stringent licensing and standards bodies, with the Australian Institute of Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heating (AIRAH) establishing best practice guidelines for system efficiency and safety. Refrigerant handling requires ARCtick licensing administered by the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC), which verifies technician competency through training and audits to comply with ozone protection laws.[176]

In Asia, regional variations include India's Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), which incorporates HVAC provisions into the National Building Code, focusing on safety, energy efficiency, and adaptive thermal comfort in air conditioning systems.[177] In the Philippines, the National Building Code (PD 1096), administered by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), regulates HVAC installations in buildings to ensure structural integrity, ventilation, and fire safety.[178]

Technician training differs significantly across regions; in the US, the North American Technician Excellence (NATE) certification emphasizes practical exams in HVAC installation and service, requiring core and specialty tests for validation.[179] In contrast, the UK's National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in refrigeration and air conditioning, offered through bodies like City & Guilds, focuses on workplace-based assessments at levels 2 and 3 for installation and maintenance competencies.[180] Code enforcement also varies: the US relies on state-level adoption of model codes like the IMC with local inspections, while the UK uses a national building regulations framework with delegated oversight; Australia enforces uniform national standards through state licensing but allows regional adaptations, leading to differences in compliance verification and penalties.
