ICONTEC (Colombian Institute of Technical Standards)
Introduction
Colombian Institute of Technical Standards and Certification (ICONTEC)
is a non-profit organization in Colombia founded by a group of 18 businessmen and union leaders, on May 10, 1963, in charge of supervising compliance with national and international standards.
This organization is active at the service of the Colombian government, as well as the private sector and any citizen who is interested in compliance with Colombian regulations. ICONTEC also works closely with other international organizations for standardization such as the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN). It is also responsible for accrediting other organizations, companies and individuals that are dedicated to manufacturing or productive development and industrial processes. ICONTEC is a member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and an active partner of American standardization organizations such as the Pan American Commission for Technical Standards (COPANT) and CEI.[1] This organization is present in different countries on the American continent. Its headquarters reside in Bogotá.
History
The civil engineer Javier Henao Londoño was elected as the first executive director of the entity, while the chemical engineer Mario Gómez Gaviria was elected as the first president of the Board of Directors. It opened its headquarters in Bogotá and joined the Pan American Commission for Technical Standards (Copant) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).[2].
