Introduction

Alicia Ziccardi is an Argentine sociologist who has become a Mexican national, a student of the social and urban problems of Mexican and Latin American cities and regions. She is a senior researcher in the Urban and Regional Studies Area of the Social Research Institute "Instituto de Ciencias Sociales (UNAM)") (IISUNAM) and professor of the Postgraduate Programs in Political and Social Sciences and in Urban Planning at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). She is an emeritus researcher of the National System of Researchers of Mexico "Sistema Nacional de Investigadores (Mexico)") and is part of the Mexican Academy of Sciences. Between 2009 and 2017 he directed the University Program of City Studies at the National Autonomous University of Mexico.[1].

Biography

She graduated from the Sociology degree at the University of Buenos Aires and graduated from the Postgraduate Program in Training of Researchers in Urban and Regional Development of the CEUR - Torcuato Di Tella Institute. In 1979 she obtained a Master's degree in Sociology from the Instituto Universitário de Pesquisas do Rio de Janeiro (IUPERJ) and later completed a doctorate in Political Science at the University of São Paulo. She holds a doctorate in Economics from UNAM (1988) with the thesis “Urban politics and the construction industry: The case of public works in Mexico City (1976-1982)”[2] with honorable mention and receiving the “Gabino Barreda” medal. In 2003, she completed a postdoctoral stay at the Institute of Government and Public Policies of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, where she worked with Dr. Joan Subirats on the topic “Poverty, social exclusion and social policies.” Since 1984 she joined the area of urban and regional studies of the Institute of Social Research of the UNAM, where she is currently a senior researcher.

As part of her academic activities, she was the first coordinator of the CLACSO Working Group on Poverty and Social Policies. At IIS-UNAM he coordinated the Urban and Regional Sociology Area and was a member of its Internal Council. At the Mexican Academy of Sciences he was a representative of researchers in the Area of Social Sciences and is currently a member of the Editorial Committee of the Science Magazine. He has participated in different juries, editorial committees and evaluation and ruling commissions at UNAM and other academic institutions, national (SNI-CONACYT, COLEF, FLACSO, UNAM, CIESAS, Instituto Mora, COLMEX) and foreign (CLACSO, FLACSO-Quito, UNGS). He is part of the body of thesis tutors of the Graduate Program in Political and Social Sciences and Urban Planning at the UNAM and is currently a representative of the researchers of the Social Research Institute in its Academic Committee.
