Historical hydraulic work
Introduction
The San Renovato Dam is a historic hydraulic work located in the city of Guanajuato "Guanajuato (Guanajuato)"), Mexico. It is part of the dam system that, together with the Olla Dam, was built for water supply and flood control in the mining capital. The property is part of the Historical Monuments Zone of Guanajuato, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988.[1].
History
The dam was built in the century as a complement to the Presa de la Olla, in order to increase the water storage capacity and improve the management of hydraulic resources in the city. Its construction responded to the need to control the floods that recurrently affected Guanajuato, as well as to guarantee supply for the population and mining activities.[2].
Architecture
The dam is characterized by its masonry and quarry wall, with a design adapted to the relief of the valley. In its upper part, decorative mosaics added during later interventions stand out, which constitute a unique attraction of the site. The reservoir is surrounded by vegetation, integrating into the landscape of the Presa de la Olla area.[3].
Asset value
The site is registered in the inventory of historical monuments of the National Institute of Anthropology and History and is protected as part of the Historical Monuments Zone of Guanajuato, decreed in 1982 and recognized by UNESCO in 1988.[4].
Current use
The dam is still in operation and, in addition to fulfilling its hydraulic function, it constitutes a recreational and tourist space that complements the attractiveness of the nearby Presa de la Olla.
