NBBJ is an American architecture, urban planning and design studio with offices in Beijing, Boston, Columbus "Columbus (Ohio)"), Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, New York, Portland, Pune, San Francisco "San Francisco (California)"), Seattle and Shanghai. NBBJ provides architecture, interior design, urban planning, branding, consulting, landscaping and lighting services. The studio has a presence in various markets and building types, including public, corporate, commercial, healthcare, educational, scientific and sports. It is the only architecture firm to have been named a Global Growth Company by the World Economic Forum, and is a member of the New Cities Foundation.[1][2].
The studio accepted the Architecture 2030 challenge, a global initiative that aims for all new buildings and major renovations to reduce their fossil fuel consumption by 50% by 2010, gradually increasing the reduction in new buildings until reaching carbon neutrality in 2030. In addition, it has been recognized by Engineering News-Record magazine as one of the greenest architecture firms in the United States.[4]
History
NBBJ was founded in 1943 by Seattle architects Floyd Naramore, William J. Bain, Clifton Brady and Perry Johanson, and was initially called Naramore, Bain, Brady & Johanson. These architects formed the firm during World War II to accept large-scale federal commissions in the area, such as the expansion of the Bremerton Naval Shipyard, but remained together after the war's end.[5] The firm continued to focus on projects in the Pacific Northwest, becoming the largest architectural firm in the region, before accepting projects in other areas of the United States. In 1976, it merged with the Columbus studio Godwin, Nitschke, Bohm "Columbus (Ohio)") (Ohio) to form the current NBBJ.[6][7].
