Introduction
The term upholsterer has two meanings. The first meaning refers to the artisan who makes tapestries. The second meaning refers to the craftsman who covers domestic, automobile, motorcycle or boat seats with tapestries, fabric or leather, fixing the material with tacks or staples. It is also dedicated to improving their comfort by installing springs, foams or plant fibers inside. The upholsterer is a craftsman with knowledge of structures and materials.[1].
History
The first upholsterers were Egyptians from 5,000 BC. who left upholstered chairs that have been found in the tombs of the pharaohs and are the oldest vestiges of this craft.
Throughout history, nomadic people covered the floor of their tents with rugs and cushions, seeking comfort. It was also under these circumstances that the first folding chairs and tables were created, probably made by the same craftsmen who made tents. We can see all this in ancient engravings that have been preserved to this day.
In the Middle Ages, kings and nobles had craftsmen at their service who made wooden armchairs and chairs for them with leather seats at first and later with seats filled with animal hair or plant fibers covered with fabric.
It was during the Renaissance when armchairs, chairs and sofas acquired their greatest elegance and sophistication. For this, the cabinetmakers worked in very close contact with the upholsterers to achieve their orders from the nobility.
Since the 70s, upholsterers have used synthetic foams to fill chairs, stools, armchairs and sofas. Although goose down and natural fiber fillings continue to have a lot of value.[2].
