Free space system
Introduction
The expression free floor plan is an architectural concept used to indicate that the structure of a building is totally independent of the vertical elements that divide the space (walls, partitions). As these elements have no structural function, the space can be organized as desired, without the need to maintain a rigidly ordered layout, typical of load-bearing walls.
The concept, linked to architecture since the Modern Movement, was investigated by various architects and especially used and disseminated by Le Corbusier and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, among others. One conception was a consequence of the adaptation to steel and concrete architecture, which allows structures with pillars to be designed instead of structures with load-bearing walls.
