The Colombian Engineering Society is a non-profit organization with scientific, union and academic objectives that is used as an advisory center for the National Government of Colombia and different local governments such as mayors and governorships that brings together experienced engineers and recent graduates to carry out work together.[2] Founded in 1887 and based in the city of Bogotá.[3] It also brings together various smaller associations, each of them framed in one of the specializations. of engineering. Together with universities, it promotes research in the field of engineering, specializing in civil engineering and environmental resources.[1].
History
On April 25, 1873, the engineers Manuel Peña, Abelardo Ramos, Ruperto Ferreira and Manuel Ponce de León met and formed a first association that was known as the Society of Engineers of Colombia, Manuel Ponce de León was the first president of this initial association and Indalecio Liévano vice president. The initiative did not prosper and quickly disintegrated.[4].
After a failed attempt, engineers Diódoro Sánchez, Abelardo Ramos, Miguel Triana and Andrés Arroyo raised the idea of resuming the Society of Engineers of Colombia. The engineers called a meeting on May 29, 1887 with their colleagues residing in the city of Bogotá in the office of Diódoro Sánchez, in this place after Abelardo Ramos presented the idea of reviving the society, it was declared founded with the name Colombian Society of Engineers. Abelardo Ramos was elected as the president and Diódoro Sánchez as secretary of the newly founded society. At the same time, a commission drafted the statutes which were approved on June 12. The first headquarters was the same office where the company was declared founded until March 1893.[4].
After the society was founded, some national and academic problems were discussed, such as the organization of the engineering school of the National University, the drafting of the mining code and the definition of the railroad route between the city of Bogotá and the Magdalena River. In 1894 the company was requested for the first time by the National Government when the House of Representatives consulted it on what the track gauge should be on the national railways.
The vice president in charge at the time, Miguel Antonio Caro, and the Minister of Public Works, José Manuel Goenaga, issued the decree on railway inspection. With this decree, he recognized the society as an advisory body of the Government and granted it the use of premises in the building of the Engineering School of the National University "Universidad Nacional de Colombia (Bogotá)"), where from March 12, 1893, the society's archive, museum and library operated.[4].
