Fluorine
Introduction
Fluor Corporation is a multinational engineering and construction company headquartered in Irving, Texas, United States.
Fluor is a conglomerate that provides services through its subsidiaries in four areas: energy and chemicals, industrial and infrastructure, government and Fluor Global Services; whose function is to provide services such as personnel services and equipment rental. According to Fortune 500, Fluor is ranked 109th on their list and is ranked as the largest construction company.
Founded by John Simon Fluor in 1912 under the name Fluor Construction Company, it grew rapidly, thanks mainly to the construction of oil refineries, pipelines and other facilities for the oil and gas industry; making its way first in California and then in the Middle East to finally establish its presence throughout the world.
In the late 1960s it began to diversify into a drilling company, mining coal and other raw materials, such as lead. A global recession in the oil and gas industry, coupled with losses from its mining operation, led to its restructuring and layoffs of employees in the 1980s. Fluor sold its oil operations and diversified its construction work into a range of services and broader industries.
In the 1990s Fluor introduced new services such as equipment rental and personnel services. Nuclear waste cleanup projects and various types of environmental work became a significant part of Fluor's revenue.
Likewise, Fluor has been a part of projects related to reconstruction work such as the Manhattan Project, reconstruction after the Iraq War, restoration after Hurricane Katrina and the construction of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System.
Company history
Company beginnings
In 1890, John Simon Fluor and his brother Rudolph Fluor founded Fluor Corporation, a lumber and paper processor in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.[2][3] John Fluor served as its president[3] and contributed $100 of his personal savings to help start the business.[4] By 1903 the company's name changed to Fluor Bros. Construction Co.[3].
In 1912, John Fluor moved to Santa Ana, California for health reasons without his brothers[5] and under the name Fluor Construction Company,[6] from the garage of his home.[5][7] By 1924, the business had annual revenues of $100,000 (equivalent to $1.36 million in 2013)[3] and a staff of 100 employees. John Fluor delegated most of the company's operations to his sons Peter and Simon Fluor.[8] That same year, upon incorporation, a capital investment of $100,000 was made.[3].
