History
FCC is the parent company of one of the largest European infrastructure and public services groups, both in terms of turnover and profitability.[9] Although it was initially a construction company, in 1911 it began its activity in the field of public services with a contract for cleaning and maintenance of the Barcelona sewer network.
Its basic activities are the management of environmental services, the management of the integral water cycle, the construction of large infrastructures, the production of cement and real estate management.[10].
It has a presence in 25 countries around the world and more than 44.6% of its turnover comes from international markets, mainly from Europe and the United States.[11][12].
In October 2013, Bill Gates entered the company as a reference shareholder with 5.7%,[13] due to FCC's positioning in sectors linked to its sustainability visions (Environmental Services and Water). Shortly after, in December of that same year, the financier George Soros became a shareholder in the company with 3%.[14].
In December 2014, FCC carried out a capital increase for an amount of 1,000 million euros,[15] which allowed the incorporation of businessman Carlos Slim as a majority shareholder.[16].
Sanctions
In July 2022, the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) imposed a fine of 40.4 million euros on FCC for having altered, along with other important Spanish construction companies, thousands of public tenders for building and civil infrastructure works for 25 years.[17].
In January 2023, the National Court provisionally suspends the sanction imposed by the CNMC on FCC Construction, which consisted of the payment of a fine of 40.4 million euros and the prohibition of contracting with the Public Administration. The measure has been taken while the appeal presented by the company is being resolved.[18][19][20].
