Introduction

Within the field of Museology studies, Heritage Authenticity is an evaluation based on the Nara Document on Authenticity"),[1] which aims to confirm the value of a cultural asset. This evaluation will also determine the relevance of the conservation, protection and safeguarding of said asset in a town, a region or in humanity. The realization of this evaluation will take into account different cultural and socioeconomic values that will provide justifications for the safeguarding or abandonment of a cultural asset.

To consider a heritage asset as authentic, aspects such as the originality of the materials with which it was built, the history of the object of study, and the way in which it has aged and changed over time must be taken into account. In a monument or geographical site considered as a work of art, for example, one must take into account, among other things, the creative, aesthetic and poetic process that produced it as a genuine object of the historical, social or political context of the time, which would also include the genuine passage of time, for this reason, a replica or an identical object lacks this authenticity value. Thus, we must consider four fundamental aspects that determine authenticity: authenticity of the design, authenticity of the materials, authenticity of the architecture and authenticity of the environment. However, although the object of the evaluation contains said values in itself, the evaluation also takes into account the social, cultural, political and historical values of the place or population in which said good is located, therefore, there are values that are external to the good and that determine its relevance.

Los valores considerados varían según el espacio geográfico o temporal en el que los bienes patrimoniales estén insertos. Estos valores fluctúan entre los culturales y los socioeconómicos se asocian con los bienes patrimoniales, si los valores se consideran significativos, darán una justificación para la protección y conservación de este bien patrimonial. Sin embargo, la ausencia de dichas valores o justificaciones podrían llevar al abandono o destrucción a dicho bien material, así pues, valores nacionalistas o políticas que varían con el tiempo, pueden justificar la protección de un bien en un espacio temporal determinado y relegar dicha valoración posteriormente.

Restoration

This concept accepts several definitions, restoration is commonly understood as the return to an object of its lost appearance or form, this term often known and related within museological studies as restoration period. In other cases, the term restoration was considered a destructive or negative procedure and in other cases it is understood as the conservation of cultural sites. However, The Letter to Venice provides a specific definition as indicated in Article 9-13, which specifies that restoration not only seeks to preserve the integrity of the cultural property, it also reveals its cultural value and improves the legibility of its design. This operation must be directed based on studies and research of a critical-historical nature, all this with the disposition of existing materials, thus, it moves away from the traditional definition that only has the goal of simply returning the property to a previous state.

Taking into account the above, it must be taken into account that during the last two centuries, the concept and processes of restoration have been changing and evolving, all of this focused towards proximity to the management and treatment of assets in a coherent manner when it comes to the restoration of monuments or collections. However, in other types of cultural assets such as historical sites or landscapes, this concept of restoration is more complex, therefore, the research on which these restorations are based must take into account aspects such as methodologies that are originated from interdisciplinary technical cooperation and the exchange of experiences. Restoration treatments inevitably involve the loss of some of the cultural values that said restoration seeks to demonstrate, however, this loss is justified to preserve the essential integrity of cultural properties for future generations, which is why different strategies are generated that follow the following principles:

• - Ensure a principle of reversibility.

• - Use reversible materials, as long as the technique allows it.

• - Try not to affect future interventions.

• - Do not prevent the possibility of subsequent access to the evidence of the object.

Thus, the restoration can be preserved if:.

- Said restoration allows the conservation of the majority of the historical material existing in the property.

- Ensures harmony with the original designs (Aspects such as color, tone, shape, texture and scale).

- They prevent additions that dominate the original fabrics and respect their archaeological potential.

- Complies with the authenticity test in terms of design, material, invoice or implementation in the case of cultural landscapes, their distinctive characteristics and components.

As previously noted, the priority of restoration is to establish the cultural value of the heritage asset. All treatments (including, for example, protection, consolidation or restoration) must guarantee the authenticity of the cultural site, thus prolonging the duration of its integrity and preparing it for interpretation.
