Definition
Basic concept of electrical cords
Power cords are sets of flexible electrical cables used to connect electrical equipment to the power source. They are designed to transport electrical current safely and efficiently, allowing mobility and adaptability in various industrial, commercial and domestic applications.
Generally, an electrical cord is composed of one or several insulated conductors, protected by an outer covering that guarantees the mechanical and electrical integrity of the assembly. These devices are essential for the extension of electrical energy and the temporary or permanent connection of electrical appliances in different environments.
Features and components of electrical cords
electrical conductors
The core of electrical cords is made up of conductors, usually made of copper or aluminum, due to their excellent electrical conductivity properties. Copper is the most used material due to its high conductivity, ductility and resistance to corrosion.
The conductors can be composed of a single solid strand or multiple thin strands stranded to improve the flexibility of the cord. The cross section of the conductor varies according to the current capacity it must carry, respecting current regulations to guarantee the safety and efficiency of the system.
Furthermore, the number of conductors in an electrical cord depends on the application, and can be unipolar, bipolar or multipolar, adapting to the specific needs of the equipment or installation.
Insulating materials and covers
The electrical conductors are covered with insulating materials that prevent contact between them and with the environment, preventing short circuits and electrocutions. The most common insulating materials are PVC (polyvinyl chloride), synthetic rubber and polyethylene.
The outer sheath of the cord offers mechanical protection and resistance to environmental factors such as humidity, abrasion, extreme temperatures and chemicals. Its design varies depending on the type of use, and can be more rigid for fixed installations or highly flexible for mobile applications.
