Dilatometer
Introduction
Dilatometer is a scientific instrument for measuring volume change. They are instruments used to measure the relative expansion/contraction of solids at different temperatures.
A familiar use of a dilatometer is the mercury thermometer, in which the change in volume of the liquid column is read from a graduated scale. Because mercury has a fairly constant thermal expansion over normal temperature ranges, volume changes can be directly related to temperature.
Thermal expansion is defined by:.
This is how its thermodynamic definition is also an important engineering parameter.
Dilatometers have been used for quality control in materials or production.
