Between the mid-1940s and the 1950s, several advances in computer programs occurred. Some of these advances are servomotors controlled by generated impulses (1949), a digital computer with built-in operations to automatically coordinate transformations to calculate radar-related vectors (1951), and the graphical mathematical process of forming a shape with a digital machine tool (1952).

In 1953, MIT researcher Douglas T. Ross saw the "interactive display equipment" used by radar operators, believing it would be exactly what his SAGE-related data reduction group needed. Ross and the other researchers at the Lincoln Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology") were the only users of the complex display systems installed for the preSAGE Cape Cod system. Ross stated in an interview that they "used it as their own personal workstation." The designers of these early computers created utility programs to ensure that programmers could debug the software, using flowcharts in a viewer, with logic switches that could be opened and closed during the debugging session. They discovered that They could create electronic symbols and geometric figures to create simple circuit diagrams and flowcharts.

These programs also allowed objects to be reproduced at will; It was also possible to change its orientation, linkage (flow, mechanics, lexical scope) or scale. This offered them numerous possibilities.

1960 - 1970

The invention of 3D CAD/CAM is usually attributed to the French engineer Pierre Bézier (Arts et Métiers ParisTech, Renault). Between 1966 and 1968, after his mathematical work on surfaces, he developed UNISURF to facilitate the design of parts and tools for the automobile industry. UNISURF then became the basis for subsequent generations of CAD software.

In parallel, the French automobile manufacturer Citroen had developed its SPAC design system (system de programmatic automatique Citroen) as part of its CAD/CAM solution SADUSCA (assistance systems for the definition and machining of body surfaces), both based on the mathematical works of Paul de Casteljau from 1959. In 1968, it was using an IBM 360-40, then 360-65 for work by batches, but it already had a graphical interface with an IBM 2250 prototype.

However, it is possible that CAD was used earlier at Boeing, as it was used to design the exterior surface of the Boeing 727 aircraft (which was released in 1962). In 1960, Boeing's William Fetter coined the term "infographic" based on his drawings of human factors cockpits. In 1962 a computer graphics department was created, and by 1965 computer films had already begun to be made.

However, the mathematician Paul de Casteljau, from Citroën; Pierre Bézier, from Renault; Steven Anson Coons of MIT; James Ferguson of Boeing; GM's Carl de Boor, George David Birkhoff, and Garibedian did more substantial work on polynomial curves and sculpted surfaces in the 1960s; and W. Gordon and R. Riesenfeld, of GM, in the seventies.

2010 - 2020

Assembly modeling is a fundamental task in computer-aided design (CAD), accounting for approximately one-third of the work in this type of flows. Optimizing this process offers a great opportunity to improve CAD systems; However, current research on assembly-based modeling cannot be directly applied to modern systems as it ignores the predominant data structure: parametric boundary representations (BREPs). In CAD assembly modeling, components are connected using pairwise constraints called “mates,” which are defined with respect to the BREP topology of the model, rather than using global coordinates as in existing work.[2]​.
