Differential settlement pathology
Introduction
The collapse of the Space building was a tragedy that occurred in Medellín, Colombia, on October 12, 2013. At 8:17 PM, tower 6 of the residential complex collapsed, leaving 12 people dead and 2 injured.[1].
This collapse became one of the most serious structural disasters in the country's recent history and generated a wide debate about construction standards, the regulation of the real estate industry, and the responsibility of construction companies in Colombia.[2].
Likewise, it was the first episode of the crisis of sick buildings in Medellín, in which it was discovered that multiple buildings, many of them built by the same business group that built Space, had structural failures.[3][4].
Construction and history
The Space project, located on Carrera 24D #10E-120, Loma del Padre Marianito sector in commune 14 (El Poblado) "El Poblado (Medellín)") of Medellín, was a reinforced concrete residential complex designed by architect Laureano Forero, with structural plans by engineer Jorge de Jesús Aristizábal, and built by Lérida CDO, part of the CDO Group.
Its construction took place between 2006 and 2013,[5] covering an area of 10,800 square meters. The project consisted of six stages (or towers), designed as a unified structure, although each one presented different heights and basement levels.[6].
The first stages had between two and three basements, while the last, Tower 6, reached 23 floors over four basements, being the tallest of the complex.[7].
The complex offered approximately 160 loft and duplex apartments between 60 and 150 square meters, promoted as traditional constructions with column, beam and masonry systems.
However, after the collapse of Tower 6 and the analysis of the debris and remaining structures, it was determined that a traditional construction system was not used, but rather a combination of different systems.[8].
Structural problems and prior warnings
Since its construction, the Space building in Medellín faced serious structural problems, which were pointed out by both residents and construction experts.
