Introduction
The Montjuïc pedestrian walkways are located on Avenida de la Reina María Cristina and cross over Avenida de Rius i Taulet, in the Sants-Montjuïc district, in Barcelona (Spain). They are the first link in a system of stairs built for the Olympic Games to facilitate access to the Montjuïc facilities "Montjuïc (Barcelona)").
History
The pedestrian walkways on Rius i Taulet Avenue were built for the 1992 Olympic Games to facilitate pedestrian access to the Montjuïc facilities.
The structure had become more necessary as the importance of the Barcelona Fair increased. To reach it, pedestrians had to cross the Avenue barrier, so this structure had to be elevated. Before their construction, there was some concern about the negative impact that the walkways could cause: around them there were going to be the National Palace at the top of Montjuïc, the Magic Fountain of Montjuic and María Cristina Avenue, places that had been the base of the Universal Exposition of Barcelona in 1929 "International Exhibition of Barcelona (1929)"). That is why his project was delayed until it became inevitable in order to access the Olympic Ring.
Its design had to be discreet so as not to gain prominence compared to all the emblematic structures that were erected around it and that constituted the image of Barcelona. Thus, the light on the Avenue had to be saved in the most elegant way possible.
All of this constituted a challenge, since it also had to be taken into account that during the Games and at times when the fairs were very crowded, the pedestrian occupancy on the walkways would be very high, so their design would have to resist the efforts of this load, and at the same time give a feeling of security to pedestrians (to avoid cases such as what occurred in London in 2000 with the Millennium Bridge). Furthermore, a way could be thought of to channel the flow of people so as not to create situations in which crossing from one side to the other of the Avenue would be complicated due to pedestrians walking in opposite directions.
Project
The use, for the first time in Spain, of high-resistance concrete (80 MPa),[1] the use of post-tensioning and the unique structural typology chosen has allowed the construction of very slender exposed concrete walkways, fully integrated into an environment of high architectural value.
