Curves and Countercurves
Introduction
Mixtilinear arch is a type of arch "Arch (architecture)") composed of a combination of straight and curved lines, generally alternating straight lines and curves.[1] It is an arch that combines concave and convex curved lines with straight lines at incoming and outgoing angles. It was used extensively in Spanish-Muslim architecture and Mudejar architecture, characteristic of the Taifa era in the Aljafería of Zaragoza. These types of arches were prominent in late-century Gothic in the Iberian Peninsula, especially in Castile with the Elizabethan Gothic and in Portugal with the Manueline style. Centuries later they were used again in the Spanish baroque known as churrigueresque, having great diffusion in Latin America.
