Evolution in the domain of controlled demolition led to the world record[4]​ demolition of the Kingdome in Seattle on March 26, 2000.[5]​.

In 1997, a hospital implosion in Canberra, Australia ended in disaster. The main building did not completely disintegrate and had to be demolished manually. Much worse, the explosion was not contained to the site and large pieces of debris were projected towards spectators located 500 meters away, in a place considered safe for viewing. A twelve-year-old girl died instantly, and nine other people were injured. Large fragments of masonry and metal flew more than 650 meters away from the demolition site.[6]​.

On December 13, 2009, an unfinished 31-story condominium tower, known as the Sea Tower, was demolished on South Padre Island, Texas. The construction of this tower had begun in 2006, but due to a problem in its foundation system it had been sinking unevenly during construction, so the work was stopped in 2008, it is considered one of the tallest reinforced concrete structures to be demolished using explosives.[7]​.
