Continuity management
Introduction
Business continuity management is the activity carried out in an organization to ensure that all critical business processes will be available to customers, suppliers, and other entities that must access them.[1] These activities include a large number of daily tasks such as project management, system backups, change control, and helpdesk. Continuity management is not implemented when a disaster occurs, but refers to all those activities that are carried out daily to maintain the service and facilitate recovery.[2].
The basis of continuity management is the policies, guides, standards and procedures implemented by an organization. All system design, implementation, support and maintenance must be based on obtaining a good business continuity plan, disaster recovery and in some cases, system support. Sometimes the continuity plan or contingency plan is confused with disaster recovery management, but they are different concepts. Disaster recovery is a small part of continuity management.[3].
The term business continuity describes a philosophy or methodology of developing business activity, while business continuity planning is the activity that determines what this methodology should be. The business continuity plan can be seen as the methodology used by the organization's users on a daily basis to ensure the normal development of the business.
The necessary components in the continuity plan necessary to have a documented plan include:.
Policies
Policies are a series of rules imposed by the management spheres of the organization that support all business processes and that are developed following a specific plan.
Guides
The guides are a series of concepts that are recommended to be followed according to the designated plan. However, depending on business needs and requirements, these guidelines may be ignored or altered during implementation.
Standards
Standards consist of the technical specifications made for the implementation of all business processes. They are a derivative of policies and guidelines.
