Introduction
The Pierina mine is an open-pit gold mining deposit in Peru located in the district of Jangas, province of Huaraz, department of Ancash, 13 kilometers from the town of Jangas, and at an altitude between 3,800 and 4,200 meters above sea level. It is currently in the closure phase and is operated by Minera Barrick Misquilquicha of Barrick Gold Corporation. In 2009 it produced 8.42 million ounces, ranking as the fifth largest gold mine in the country, after Yanacocha, Alto Chicama, Madre de Dios and Orcopampa").[1]
History
The company began exploring the deposit in 1997 and after three years exploitation began in 2000. In 2009 it reached its maximum production and in 2015 it entered the mine closure process.[2].
Zone of influence of the mining operation
According to the mining company, the area of influence of the operation includes 18 communities distributed in two districts of the province of Huaraz:[3].
• - 5 in the Independencia district "Independencia District (Huaraz)"): San Juan de Pisco, Shecta, Chontayoc, Ramón Castilla and Tinyash.
• - 13 in the Jangas district: Jangas, Chaquecyaco, Jahua, Huanja, Huantallón, Mareniyoc, Mataquita, Pacollón, Tara, Cahuish, Antahuarán, Atupa and Cuncashqa.

• - On March 28, 2011, the Barrick Misquiquilcha Mining company was sanctioned with 105 UIT (Tax Tax Units) by the Energy and Mining Investment Supervisory Body for the death of the worker Francisco Vargas Quispe in the mining unit on February 10, 2009.[4][5].

• - On April 30, 2014, the Barrick Mining company was fined 50 UIT by the Environmental Assessment and Control Agency due to a discharge in the Pucaurán ravine in the Jangas district that exceeded the maximum permissible levels of heavy metals (zinc and iron).[6].
