A study carried out by the environmental protection agency of the Spanish Ministry of the Environment and the gas research institute (Gas Research Institute, now Gas Techonolgy Insitute) in 1997 sought to discover whether the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions from increased natural gas (predominantly methane) employment would be offset by a possible increased level of methane emissions from sources such as exhausts and tailpipes. The study concluded that the emissions reduction from increased natural gas use greatly outweighs the detrimental effect of increased methane emissions. Thus, the increased use of natural gas instead of other dirtier fossil fuels can serve to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the United States.

Transport

Modern energy-efficient technologies, such as electric vehicles and the future development of new technologies such as hydrogen-powered cars, may reduce oil consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.

The change from air transport and road transport to rail transport (train, metro), especially when they use renewable electricity, reduces polluting emissions significantly.[18]​.

Increasing temporary use of biofuels (such as biodiesel and biobutanol, which can be used at 100% concentrations in today's gasoline and diesel engines) can also reduce emissions if produced efficiently, especially in conjunction with hybrid-electric vehicles.

Effective urban planning to reduce urban sprawl would reduce Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) by minimizing transportation emissions. Increasing the use of public transportation would also contribute to reducing architectural energy emissions, per kilometer of each passenger.

Urban planning also has an effect on energy consumption. Between 1982 and 1997, the amount of land consumed for urban development in the United States increased by 47%, while the country's population grew by only 17%. Inefficient land use for development practices has increased infrastructure costs, as well as the amount of energy needed for transportation, community services and buildings.

At the same time, a growing number of citizens and government officials have begun to promote a smarter approach to land use planning. These smart growth practices include compact community development, multiple transportation options, mixed land uses, and practices to conserve green space. These programs offer environmental, economic and quality of life benefits, they also serve to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.

Approaches such as New Urbanism and transit-oriented development try to reduce travel distances, especially for private vehicles, encourage public transportation, and make walking and cycling options more attractive. This is achieved through medium density, mixed-use planning and concentration of housing, within walking distance of urban centers and transport nodes.

Smarter land use growth uses policies that have a direct and indirect effect on energy consumption behavior. For example, the energy use of transportation, the number of users of petroleum fuels, could be considerably reduced through more compact and mixed use of land patterns, which in turn could be covered by a greater variety of non-automotive transportation base options.

Elimination of superfluous methane

Methane (also known as natural gas) is a gas with a much more powerful greenhouse effect than carbon dioxide. The combustion of a methane molecule generates a carbon dioxide molecule. Consequently, burning methane that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere (such as in oil wells, landfills, coal mines, waste treatment plants, etc.) provides a net greenhouse gas emissions advantage. However, reducing the amount of waste methane produced in the first place has an even greater beneficial impact, as could other ways to productively use otherwise spent methane.

Coal capture and storage

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a scheme to mitigate climate change by capturing carbon dioxide (CO) from large emission points such as fossil fuel power plants[19]​ and then safely storing it instead of releasing it into the atmosphere. The technology for CO2 capture is already commercially available and there are several projects in operation in Spain, such as the one in Compostilla, in León, and an Elcogás project in the Puertollano plant (Ciudad Real).[20] CO2 storage, on the other hand, is a relatively unproven concept and as of 2007, no hydroelectric plant operates with a complete carbon capture and storage system. When this technique is used with biomass "Biomass (energy"), the technique is known as biomass energy with carbon capture and storage and can be carbon negative").

CCS applied to a modern conventional power plant that could reduce CO2 emissions from the atmosphere by an average of 80-90% compared to a plant without CCS.

CO2 storage is planned either in deep geological formations, deep oceans, or in the form of mineral carbonate. The geological formations are currently considered the most promising, and are estimated to have a storage capacity of at least 2000 Gt CO2. The IPCC estimates that the economic potential of CCS could be between 10% and 55% of the total carbon mitigation effort until 2100.

In October 2007, the Bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas at Austin received a $32 million, 10-year contract to conduct the first intensively supervised long-term project in the United States studying the feasibility of inserting large volumes of CO2 for underground storage. The project is a research program of the Southeast Regional Coal Seizure Partnership (SECARB), founded by the U.S. National Energy Technology Laboratory, Department of Energy (DOE). 200 billion tons of CO2 from major emission sites in the region, which is equal to about thirty-three years of total U.S. emissions at the current rate Starting in the fall of 2007, the project will insert CO2, at the rate of one million tons per year, for up to 1.5 years, to a depth of up to 3,000 m (10,000 ft) below the Earth's surface near the oil field. Cranfield about 15 miles (24 km) east of Natchez, Mississippi. Experimental equipment will measure the subsurface's ability to accept and retain CO2.
