History
In times of the Second Republic, the Superior Board of the National Artistic Treasure was created in charge of the cataloguing, defense and conservation of the national artistic heritage, whose functions at the beginning of the war were assumed by the Board of Seizure and Protection of the Artistic Heritage.
Since the middle of the century, the State had three organizations dedicated to cultural heritage: the National Artistic Heritage Defense Service (SDPAN), the Institute for the Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art (ICROA) and the National Service for the Restoration of Books and Documents (SELIDO).
In 1985 the three organizations were unified together with the National Center for Artistic, Archaeological and Ethnological Information, the General Subdirectorate of Monuments and the General Subdirectorate of Archeology and Ethnology. The ICRBC (Institute for Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Assets) emerged from the merger.
After other name changes, in 2008 it was renamed Institute of Cultural Heritage of Spain (IPCE).
