The project was abandoned due to the prediction of an oracle who stated that by this means a passage would perhaps be opened to the barbarians. Later Darius continued this same canal, which, according to Herodotus, had already been sailed for four days, while Diodorus says that this Prince only built a part of it, leaving the rest imperfect because he had shown him that the Red Sea was higher than Egypt and that if he cut the isthmus he would flood the entire country, the same thing that other authors report with little difference.

There were other canals in Egypt, but these were used more for irrigation than for navigation. The largest of all was the one that Moeris had built to lead the waters of the Nile to the great lake that he had ordered to be made. It is said that this canal was eighty stadia long and three hundred feet wide, and whose entrance could be opened and closed as appropriate. The famous rivers of Asia, the Euphrates and the Tigris, were in communication by means of a canal that some believe to be the work of Nebuchadnezzar; and another canal, which linked the Tigris with the Euleus"), served Alexander well in his conquests.

The Greeks and Romans planned to open a canal by cutting the Isthmus of Corinth, which united the regions of Achaea and Morea, in order to be able to pass from the Ionian Sea to the Archipelago. This isthmus is barely more than two leagues long and carving it saved the boats from having to travel one hundred and sixty leagues around the Peloponnese peninsula and doubling a very dangerous cape due to its many reefs. The tyrant Periander of Corinth was the first to think of this project five or six years before the Christian era. Demetrius Poliorcetes, king of Macedonia, three centuries later tried to make an island in the Peloponnese, a venture he later abandoned. Julius Caesar, Gaius Caligula, Nero and finally Herod Atticus tried to hinder or frustrate this attempt. So many difficulties, many of them insurmountable, gave rise to this Latin proverb: Isthmum fodere. The Corinth Canal would finally be opened much later, with work taking place between 1881 and 1893.

Herodotus says that Xerxes, in his expedition against Greece, had a canal opened - the canal of Xerxes - and cut the isthmus that joined the peninsula of Mount Athos with the continent to avoid navigating a stretch of sea in which one of his fleets had been lost some years before. Plutarch relates that Marius, camped near the Rhône, was unable to supply his army at the mouths of this river, which were full of sand, so he had a canal cut for eight leagues between the sea and that river, through which he could easily convey the supplies he needed. Drusus Nero, wanting to lead his army more quickly against the Caucas and Frisians, put the Rhine in communication with the Isel in the years 712 from Rome by means of a canal, which Germanicus later used in the year 16 of our era. Tacitus tells us that Corbulon was ordered by Claudius to interrupt his expedition against the Chancos and not wanting to leave his army idle, he made a canal about 22 miles long. long, by which he put the river Meuse in communication with the Rhine.

The Romans, no less than the Egyptians and the peoples of Asia, although the construction of their main canals was the work of their warrior genius to facilitate transportation and make marches more quickly, did not neglect the irrigation canals, so interesting for the agricultural people. Thus Cato and most ancient writers consider as the richest of possessions a field that can be irrigated, solum irrigunm. Cicero rightly considers the irrigation of fields as the main cause of their fertility and particularly recommends: acide ductus aquarum, derivationes fluminum, agrorum irrigationes. Vitruvius talks about the construction of these canals with great extension, etc.

China

The Chinese have surpassed the Greeks, the Romans and, in a word, all peoples in the construction of canals. According to all the news we have about this town, they have been involved in the conduction and distribution of water since ancient times. The most famous canal in China is the Yun-leang or royal canal, which was built in the year 1289 by Emperor Chi-tsou, head of the Fuen dynasty, the first of the Tatar-Mughal emperors who reigned in China. It runs the space of about 140 leagues.[1]​.

19th century

Competition, from the railways of the 1830s and the roads of the 1830s, made the smaller canals obsolete for most commercial transport, and many of Britain's canals fell into ruin. Only the Manchester Ship Canal") and the Aire and Calder Canal") did not follow this trend. However, in other countries, canals increased in size as construction techniques improved. During the century in the United States, the length of canals increased from 160 km to more than 6,800 km, with a complex network that made the Great Lakes, along with Canada, navigable, although some canals were later drained and used to collect railway rights of way.

In the United States, navigable canals reached isolated areas and brought them into contact with the world beyond. In 1825, the Erie Canal, 600 km long with 36 locks, opened a connection from the populated northeast to the Great Lakes. Settlers flooded into regions served by such canals as access to markets was available. The Erie Canal (as well as other canals) was instrumental in reducing differences in commodity prices between these various markets throughout the United States. The canals caused a convergence of prices between different regions due to reduced transportation costs, allowing Americans to ship and buy goods from farther distances much cheaper. Ohio built many miles of canals, Indiana had canals in operation for a few decades, and the Illinois and Michigan Canal connected the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River system until it was replaced by a canalized river canal.

In what is now Canada, three major canals were built for very different purposes. The first was the Welland Canal, which opened in 1829 between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, bypassing Niagara Falls, and the Lachine Canal (1825), which allowed ships to skirt the nearly impassable rapids of the St. Lawrence River in Montreal, was built for commerce. The Rideau Canal, completed in 1832, connects Ottawa on the Ottawa River with Kingston, Ontario on Lake Ontario. The Rideau Canal was built as a result of the War of 1812 to provide military transportation between the British colonies of Upper Canada and Lower Canada as an alternative to the St. Lawrence River, which was susceptible to US blockade.

In France, the stable connection of all river systems (Rhine, Rhône, Saône and Seine) and the North Sea was boosted in 1879 by the establishment of the Freycinet gauge", which specified the minimum size of locks. Canal traffic doubled in the first decades of the century.[2]​.

Many notable marine canals were completed in this period, beginning with the Suez Canal (1869), carrying tonnage many times that of most other canals, and the Kiel Canal (1897), although the Panama Canal did not open until 1914.

In the 19th century, several canals were built in Japan, including the Biwako Canal and the Tone Canal. These canals were partially built with the help of engineers from the Netherlands and other countries.

An important question was how to connect the Atlantic and the Pacific with a canal through narrow Central America. (The Panama Railroad opened in 1855.) The original proposal was for a sea-level canal through what is now Nicaragua, taking advantage of Nicaragua's relatively large lake. This canal has never been built partly due to political instability, which scared away potential investors. It is still an active project (the geography has not changed), and in the 2010s Chinese participation was developing.

The second option for a Central American canal was a Panama canal. The De Lessups company, which ran the Suez Canal, first attempted to build a Panama Canal in the 1880s. The difficult terrain and weather (rain) caused the company to go bankrupt. High worker mortality from illness also discouraged additional investment in the project. DeLessup's abandoned excavation equipment sits, isolated decaying machines, today tourist attractions.

Twenty years later, the expansionist United States, which had just acquired colonies after defeating Spain in the Spanish-American War of 1898, and whose Navy became more important, decided to reactivate the project. The United States and Colombia did not reach an agreement on the terms of a canal treaty. Panama, which did not have (and still does not have) a land connection with the rest of Colombia, was already thinking about independence. In 1903 the United States, with the support of Panamanians who hoped the canal would provide substantial wages, income, and markets for local goods and services to transform the country, remove the province of Panama from Colombia and establish a puppet republic (Panama). Its currency, the balboa, a name that suggests the country began as a way to get from one hemisphere to the other, was a replica of the US dollar. The US dollar was and remains legal tender (used as currency). A US military zone, the Canal Zone, 16 km wide, with US military stationed there (bases, 2 TV stations, channels 8 and 10, Pxs, a US-style high school), divided Panama in half. The Canal was built, an important engineering project. The United States did not feel that conditions were stable enough to withdraw until 1979. The withdrawal from Panama contributed to the defeat of President Jimmy Carter in 1980.

The surviving channels

Including most ship canals, today they primarily serve the bulk cargo and large ship shipping industries, while the once-critical smaller inland waterways, conceived and designed as ship and barge canals, have been replaced and filled in, abandoned and left to deteriorate, or kept in service and staffed by state employees, where dams and locks are maintained for flood control or recreational boating. Its replacement was gradual, beginning first in the United States in the mid-1850s, where canal transportation first increased, then began to be replaced by the use of much faster, less geographically restricted and limited, and generally cheaper railroads.

By the early 1880s, canals that had little ability to compete economically with rail transportation were off the map. Over the next two decades, the use of coal as the preferred heating fuel over oil was increasingly reduced, and the growth of coal shipments leveled off. Later, after World War I, as trucks came to life, America's last small barge canals saw a steady decline in ton-miles of freight along with many railroads, the flexibility and ability to climb steep grades of trucks taking over freight transportation increasingly like highway. Networks were improved, and they also had the freedom to make deliveries well away from railroad tracks or ditches in the ground that could not function in the winter.

The longest canal in existence today, the Grand Canal in northern China, is still widely used, especially in the part south of the Yellow River. It stretches from Beijing to Hangzhou for 1,794 kilometers.
