Burnt brick (Evolution)
Introduction
The History of brick perhaps constitutes one of the elementary chapters in the history of architecture.[Note 1].
The humble clay brick, piece of kneaded and cooked earth,[Note 2] has been replaced or complemented, over the centuries, by a long series of objects thus defined:[1].
Once again, the history of a simple object runs parallel to the history of Humanity.
Origins of brick
Contenido
Mesopotamia, India and Egypt
The oldest known brick courses, prior to 7500 BC. C., were discovered in different archaeological sites in Mesopotamia.[Note 5] Likewise, bricks dated between 7000 and 6395 BC. C., are those found in 1952 in the excavations of Jericho "Jericho (West Bank)"), near the Jordan River, and in Catal Huyuk.
Two types of bricks were found in the ruins of Jericho: the first date from the period between 8300 and 7600 BC. C. and had a size of 260x100x100 mm (similar to sliced bread). The other type, finer, is called cane brick. The use of bricks shows that it was easier to transport them than to carry the clay itself to the construction site.
Further east, in the mythical city of Mehrgarh, rough clay specimens have been dated to around 7000 BC. C.. Material with a ceramic consistency was already used in the Indus Valley culture (3300 BC to 1300 BC) as seen in the ruins of Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa.
Moving to the African continent, similar materials are found in Buhen (Nubia, Ancient Egypt). The use of molds to make regular bricks is attributed to Ancient Egypt. The different steps followed to make it have been described in the wall paintings of Rejmira, vizier of Egypt around 1450 BC. C. in Thebes (modern Luxor).
