Asphalt sheet
Introduction
Asphalt fabric is a term widely used in construction to refer to various waterproofing materials based on bituminous products. These materials, designed to create watertight barriers against water, are mainly used on roofs, roofs and foundations of buildings, although their main function is to protect the underlying structure from humidity and leaks, their composition, format and application vary significantly depending on the geographical region.[1].
Throughout construction history, bituminous solutions have been valued for their ability to repel water. However, the composition, format and application have evolved and vary considerably depending on the construction tradition and regulations of each geographical region. Although the fundamental principle of bitumen waterproofing remains, there are notable differences in the products available and how they are known, especially between the American and European environments. This terminological ambiguity is crucial, since what is known as "asphalt felt" in the European area is a different product from what is designated by similar terms in America (such as roofing felt or asphalt roll roofing in North America).[2].
In Europe: Aluminum coated bituminous sheets
In most of Europe, the term "roofing felt" commonly refers to a type of prefabricated bituminous roll used for the waterproofing of flat roofs, terraces and foundations. This product is distinguished by its composition and often by its surface finish, which may be coated with aluminum.[3].
European Product Description
The European "asphalt fabric" is a sheet composed of a modified bitumen base (with polymers such as APP for greater resistance at high temperatures or SBS for greater elasticity at low temperatures) with an internal armor (generally made of fiberglass or polyester) that gives it mechanical resistance. A very common variant in Spain, especially for walkable or exposed terraces, presents a of reduced thickness (approximately 0.08 mm to 0.1 mm), which can be engraved with a pattern of small non-slip squares.[3].
