Introduction
The American Society of Civil Engineers (in English American Society of Civil Engineers, known by its acronym ASCE) is a professional association founded in 1852 that represents civil engineers from around the world. It is the oldest engineering society in the United States. ASCE's vision is to have engineers positioned among world leaders who strive to achieve a better quality of life. Its headquarters are in Reston "Reston (Virginia)"), Virginia.

ASCE se fundó en la ciudad de Nueva York el 5 de noviembre de 1852 cuando doce ingenieros se reunieron en las oficinas del Acueducto Croton") y crearon la American Society of Civil Engineers and Architects (en español Sociedad Americana de Ingenieros Civiles y Arquitectos). ASCE fue la primera sociedad nacional de ingeniería fundada en los Estados Unidos.[1] En 1869 se retiró del nombre la parte «and Architects» («y Arquitectos») después de que éstos creasen su propia sociedad, el American Institute of Architects en 1857.[2].

In 1999, a survey was conducted among its members to identify the 10 civil engineering achievements that have had the greatest positive impact on life in the century. It was chosen to select broad categories of achievements rather than individual projects:[3].

ASCE is the largest publisher of civil engineering-related information in the world, with more than 55,000 pages of technical content each year. The ASCE Publications Division publishes 31 professional journals (available in both print and online editions), conference proceedings, standards, practice manuals, reports and monographs. A civil engineering database with 200,000 entries is available on their website, as well as many other resources for the practice of civil engineering.
