architecture studio
Introduction
An architecture studio or architecture firm is a company that employs one or more architects and practices the profession of architecture.
History
Architects (or master builders) have existed since very early in recorded history. The first known architects are Imhotep (ca. 2600 BC) and Senemut (ca. 1470 BC). There are no documents that describe how these architects carried out their work. However, like the nobles, it is reasonable to assume that they had assistants to assist them in their work. The oldest book on architecture, De architectura by the Roman architect Vitruvius, describes the design and construction of cities, buildings, clocks and machines, but does not provide information on the organization of the architect's assistants. It is generally accepted that for most of human history, most architects were wealthy people who derived their main income from other activities, and who practiced design as a part-time occupation, using different assistants for each project.
It was not until the 20th century that architecture began to be practiced as a full-time profession. In the United States, Charles Bulfinch is the first person to work as a full-time professional architect. Henry Hobson Richardson may have been one of the first to have an established office and McKim, Mead & White was one of the first to resemble the large modern architectural firm. of the world.
Legal form
In the United States, architects are licensed by the states, in Canada by the provinces, and in Australia by the states.[2][3][4] Licensure is usually achieved through a combination of formal education, internships, and exams. Although architects are licensed individually, state laws allow them to join firms. All states in the United States allow architects to form corporations, most allow corporations or professional corporations to form, and some allow limited liability companies. Some states require that the firm be registered before it can offer its services. Others only require that the firm's architectural work be performed under the direct supervision of an architect licensed in the state. A few states allow corporations to offer their services if a licensed firm employee serves as architect for all projects.[5].
