Architecture of innovation districts
Introduction
Distrito 22@, also known as 22@Barcelona or simply 22@, is a business area of about 200 hectares in the district of San Martín "Distrito de San Martín (Barcelona)") (Barcelona, Spain). It emerged in 2000 as an initiative of Barcelona City Council to transform 200 hectares of industrial land in the Pueblo Nuevo neighborhood "Pueblo Nuevo (Barcelona)") into an innovative productive district with modern spaces for the strategic concentration of knowledge-intensive activities.
To achieve this objective, a new compact city model is created, where companies coexist with universities, research, training and technology transfer centers, as well as housing, facilities and green areas. In this way, a new economic model is defined based on the development of five sectoral clusters: audiovisual media, information and communication technologies, energy, design and biotechnology, and on the execution of various strategic projects that facilitate the growth of companies, creativity, developments for coworking, networking, the attraction and retention of talent and access to innovation and technology, among others.
Reviews
The new urban plans and the attitude of the municipal government of Barcelona have caused controversy among citizens, since this economic district project is perceived as a threat to the economic stability of the neighborhood.
On the occasion of the Universal Forum of Cultures, held in Barcelona in 2004, the collective Fotut 2004[1] and other anti-forum movements campaigned against the event, as well as against the new development of the city and the city council's policies.
