Approved project
Introduction
Hiking is a non-competitive sporting activity that consists of walking following a specific itinerary. It is usually done on marked trails approved by the competent body of each country, but also on unapproved paths, rural roads and greenways.
Hiking seeks to bring people closer to the natural environment and knowledge of the area through heritage and traditional ethnographic and cultural elements, using especially dirt trails, old bridle paths and roads, ravines and royal roads, forest paths and others, avoiding as much as possible transit through paved or concrete routes. Hiking constitutes a symbiosis between sport, culture and environment.
Although not competitive, hiking sometimes has sporting events with classifications by order of arrival or by number of hikes completed, such as, for example, the Catalan Endurance Walking Cup, held in Catalonia, Spain.
Differentiation from other disciplines
Hiking is an activity that can be confused with hiking. According to the extensive literature on outdoor sports, hiking would be the closest discipline and precursor to hiking, although unlike hiking, it runs along unmarked trails and, therefore, does not have the safety and quality guarantees that approved trails provide. In most cases, the activity usually takes place during the same day.
Hiking (or trekking) can be defined as a non-competitive sports modality that consists of traveling autonomously, generally on foot, isolated places that are generally difficult to navigate, such as mountainous areas or remote places without trails. Trek is an Anglicism originating in South Africa and is used to describe undertaking a longer and more complicated trip. It is a word that began to be used in the eighties by mountaineers who traveled to the Himalayas or the Andes to define the long approaches to the base of the mountains they planned to ascend.
The approved trail
An approved trail is a sports facility, identified by a patented brand code, which is preferably developed in the natural environment and on traditional roads, and which has the approval of the competent body as it meets the requirements demanded by the legislation of each country. Its purpose is to facilitate the walker's journey with safety and quality.
