Introduction
Kengo Kuma (隈 研吾, Kuma Kengo) (Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, August 8, 1954) is a Japanese contemporary architect born in Japan in 1954.
Childhood and education
Kuma attended Eiko Gakuen primary and secondary school. After graduating in Architecture from the University of Tokyo in 1979, he worked for a time at Nihon Sekei and Toda Corporation. He then moved to New York to continue studies at Columbia University as a researcher from 1985 to 1986.
Career
In 1987, he founded the "Spatial Design Studio", and in 1990, he established his own office "Kengo Kuma & Associates". He has taught at Columbia University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Keio University, where in 2008, Kuma was awarded a PhD in Architecture. As a professor at the Graduate School of Architecture at the University of Tokyo, he directs various research projects related to architecture, urbanism, and design within his own laboratory, Kuma Lab. and Paris, designing projects of diverse types and scales around the world.

El objetivo declarado de Kuma es recuperar la tradición de los edificios japoneses y reinterpretar estas tradiciones para el siglo . En 1997 ganó el Premio del Instituto Arquitectónico de Japón y en 2009 fue nombrado Oficial de la Orden de las Artes y las Letras en Francia. Kuma es autor de numerosos libros y artículos que discuten y critican enfoques en la arquitectura contemporánea. Su texto seminal Anti-Objeto: La Disolución y Desintegración de la Arquitectura escrito en 2008, exige una arquitectura de relaciones, respetando el entorno en lugar de dominarlo. Los proyectos de Kuma mantienen un gran interés en la manipulación de la luz con la naturaleza a través de la materialidad.
