Introduction
The Project Management Institute (PMI) is a non-profit organization that associates companies and institutions related to project management. Since the beginning of 2011, it is the largest of its kind in the world, being made up of nearly 500,000 members in almost 100 countries. The head office is located in the town of Newtown Square, on the outskirts of Philadelphia (Pennsylvania, United States). Its main objectives are to formulate professional standards in project management and generate knowledge through research, developing certification programs.
History
The PMI was founded in 1969 by 40 volunteers. His first seminar was held in Atlanta (GA "Georgia (United States)"), attended by less than a hundred people. In the 1970s, the first chapter was held, which allowed the first seminar "Seminar (meeting)" to be held outside the United States. By the end of 1970, almost 2,000 members were part of the organization. In the 1980s, the first evaluation for PMP (project management professional) certification was carried out; In addition, a code of ethics was implemented for the profession. In the early 90s, the first edition of the PMBOK Guide was published, which became a basic pillar for project management and direction. Already in 2000, the PMI was made up of more than 40,000 people as active members, 10,000 certified PMPs and having sold almost 300,000 copies of the Guide.
